The China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) invites members to join a briefing with Craig Allen, President, US-China Business Council (USCBC), to discuss the outcomes from the US election and what it means for relations with China as well as potential implications for global business.
Craig will share insights into the new US Government’s expected approach to China policy, key congressional races, and line-up of senior appointments to the new administration. The conversation will also explore how members of CBBC should best interpret and navigate any policy changes which may be implemented in the years ahead.
CBBC’s Chief Executive, Peter Burnett, will host the conversation with Craig in-person from Hong Kong with attendees joining from CBBC’s network across China and the UK.

Craig Allen

On July 26, 2018, Craig Allen began his tenure in Washington, DC as the president of the US-China Business Council (USCBC), a private, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization representing over 270 American companies doing business with China. Prior to joining USCBC, Craig had a long, distinguished career in US public service.
Craig began his government career in 1985 at the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA). He entered government as a Presidential Management Intern, rotating through the four branches of ITA. From 1986 to 1988, he was an international economist in ITA’s China Office.
In 1988, Craig transferred to the American Institute in Taiwan, where he served as Director of the American Trade Center in Taipei. He held this position until 1992, when he returned to the Department of Commerce for a three-year posting at the US Embassy in Beijing as Commercial Attaché.
In 1995, Craig was assigned to the US Embassy in Tokyo, where he served as a Commercial Attaché. In 1998, he was promoted to Deputy Senior Commercial Officer. In 1999, Craig became a member of the Senior Foreign Service.
From 2000, Craig served a two-year tour at the National Center for APEC in Seattle. While there, he worked on the APEC Summits in Brunei, China, and Mexico. In 2002, it was back to Beijing, where Craig served as the Senior Commercial Officer. In Beijing, Craig was promoted to the Minister Counselor rank of the Senior Foreign Service.
After a four-year tour in South Africa, Craig became Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia at the US Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. He later became Deputy Assistant Secretary for China. Craig was sworn in as the United States ambassador to Brunei Darussalam on December 19, 2014. He served there until July 2018, when he transitioned to President of the US-China Business Council.
Craig received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in Political Science and Asian Studies in 1979. He received a Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in 1985.

Peter was appointed the Chief Executive of the CBBC in July 2024 after a 35-year career in banking.
Peter is a Graduate of the University of Oxford (MA) and a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW).
He started his career with Coopers & Lybrand in the City of London where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant. After qualification, and in 1989, he joined the Corporate Finance division of UBS Investment Bank in London. In 1995 Peter moved to Hong Kong as Head of UBS ECM, Asia. In 2000 he was appointed Head of UBS Investment Banking, Asia when he was responsible for all IB product, sector and coverage teams. In 2006 he was appointed the Chief Executive of UBS Middle East & North Africa, returning to Hong Kong as the Chairman of UBS Capital Markets, Asia in 2010.
In 2013 Peter joined Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) as the Head, Corporate Finance, Greater China & North Asia, and a member of the Executive Committee.
After four years in post Peter stepped down as Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong in September 2022. He is Treasurer of the English Schools Foundation (ESF); a member Greater China Strategy group of the ICAEW; and, Past Chair of the One Belt, One Road Committee for the Hong Kong Association of Banks. He joined the Committee of the London based Hong Kong Association in October 2022.
Peter was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to the British Business Community in Hong Kong.
In July 2022 Peter was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) by the Hong Kong Government for contributions to the development of the business community in Hong Kong.
Peter, who is a Hong Kong Permanent Resident, is married with three daughters all of whom were born in Hong Kong. He was born in Kolkota, India.
