The Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday with rich cultural and historical significance. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, it usually falls in June according to the Gregorian calendar. This festival is marked by various customs and activities that have been passed down through generations, reflecting the deep-rooted traditions of Chinese society.
One of the most iconic traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival is the making and eating of zongzi, a type of sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. Zongzi come in various shapes and fillings, depending on regional preferences. Common fillings include sweet options like red bean paste or dates, and savory options such as pork, salted duck eggs, or chestnuts. This practice is believed to commemorate the attempts to preserve Qu Yuan's body by throwing rice into the river to feed the fish.
