Cao Xueqin's Southern Family Background and 'Dream of the Red Chamber
【Content】
The family history and culture of Cao Xueqin, the author of "Dream of the Red Chamber," have had a profound and pervasive influence on his creation. By integrating the materials of the Cao family's lineage with a meticulous reading of the text of "Dream of the Red Chamber," one can deeply interpret the intertextual relationship between the two, particularly the multifaceted influence of the Cao family's life in Jiangnan on the narrative. This allows us to gain insight into the creative process of "Dream of the Red Chamber" and how Cao Xueqin overcame the constraints of his family and era. Through the artistic techniques of "concealing the truth" and employing "fictional language," he crafted a classic work that continues to be cherished by a broad readership to this day.
【Time】June 12, 15:20-17:20
【Venue】Room A109, Jianhua Building
【Presenter】
Hu Qing, Researcher at the Redology Institute, China Academy of Art.

Baduanjin
I. What is Baduanjin?
Baduanjin is a traditional Chinese internal organ guiding technique, an ancient health-preserving exercise, and is known as one of the "Three Wonders of Martial Arts" along with Yijinjing and Wuqinxi.
This health-preserving method, which combines the benefits of health exercises and fitness routines, is easy to learn and has few restrictions on the conditions required for practice. The health benefits that practitioners can gain are very satisfactory, and more and more people are beginning to practice Baduanjin.
The ancients likened this set of movements to "jin," meaning that the movements are as graceful and stretching as brocade, and because there are eight sections in the method, with each section having one movement, it is named "Baduanjin."
Baduanjin is a complete and independent fitness method that can unblock the meridians of the human body, regulate the function of the viscera, improve people's psychological states, ensure the smooth flow of Qi and blood in the body, and achieve the purpose of strengthening the body, preventing and treating diseases, and prolonging life through "adjusting the body," "adjusting the breath," and "adjusting the mind."
II. What are the benefits of practicing Baduanjin?
Traditional Chinese medicine believes that Baduanjin can strengthen muscles and bones, nourish Qi and increase strength. It has the functions of promoting Qi and blood circulation, unblocking meridians, flexing joints, and coordinating the five viscera and six bowels, which can achieve the effects of strengthening the body, nourishing the spirit, prolonging life, and preventing and treating diseases.
Baduanjin is very ideal for improving sub-health conditions, especially for improving cervical spondylosis, back and leg pain, gastrointestinal diseases, insomnia, etc., and it is also a good exercise for weight loss.
Practicing in spring can promote Yang Qi, soothe the liver and regulate Qi, and strengthen the spleen and stomach, making it very suitable.
When it comes to Baduanjin, we must mention the great master of Chinese medicine in our country, Professor Deng Tietao. Deng often practiced Baduanjin, which is also considered one of the secrets of Deng's longevity.
Deng highly praised Baduanjin, writing in his book, "Baduanjin is easy to learn and practice regularly, which has a significant effect on enhancing physical fitness and regulating the flow of Qi and blood in the body's various organs and meridians."
Another feature of Baduanjin is that it is very easy to learn. Compared with Tai Chi, Baduanjin has fewer routines and the movements are not complicated. Most people can learn it in just over ten minutes.
Baduanjin has eight separate movements, each corresponding to a certain part to exert the desired effect and regulate the whole through the part.
The eight complete movements of Baduanjin can be practiced in sequence or each movement can be practiced separately. The movements of Baduanjin are relaxed and natural, stretching and generous, with a stable posture and clear distinction between reality and virtuality.
III. Detailed Explanation of Taoist Traditional Baduanjin
The eight movements of Baduanjin are as follows:
