The Xiayuan Festival
The Xiayuan Festival is a traditional folk festival in China, held on the 15th day of the tenth lunar month. This festival is closely related to Taoist beliefs, and together with the Shang Yuan Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month and the Zhongyuan Festival on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, is collectively known as the "Three Yuan Festivals." On this day, people offer sacrifices to their ancestors, praying for blessings and smooth lives for their descendants.
In addition, some regions hold activities such as lantern viewing and stove god worship. The cultural significance of the Xiayuan Festival lies in its rituals and prayers. Every household prepares offerings and burns incense to pay homage, expressing remembrance of their ancestors and reverence for the deities.
In some areas, such as the water towns of Jiangnan, people release river lanterns on this day to convey their sorrow and blessings for deceased loved ones. In the northern regions, there is a custom called "walking away from a hundred diseases," where women walk together at night during the Xiayuan Festival, praying for health, longevity, and freedom from illness.
