Six New Railway Stations in Shanghai
The planning phase for Chongming's first railway station has been completed. Xinzhuang Railway Station will transform into a comprehensive transit hub, while Qingpu's Liantang Station is on track to be operational by the end of the year. Let's take a closer look at these new projects.
Xinzhuang Railway Station
A Stunning Revival of the Old Station
Xinzhuang Railway Station is currently in its first phase of construction.
Xinzhuang Railway Station has a history dating back to 1909. Over the years, as Metro Lines 1 and 5 opened, its role shifted to train passing, with no passenger boarding.

In 2017, the station's annex building was demolished, and the new Xinzhuang Railway Station project was officially launched. The new station is now connected to the TODTOWN project and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
The entire new station comprises the Xinzhuang station building and its passenger facilities, with a total construction area of 12,424.5 ㎡.
Once completed, the station will offer integration between the Shanghai South Link (railway), Jinshan Railway, Metro Lines 1 and 5, and buses, creating a fully interconnected transit hub.
Liantang Railway Station
A Leap for the Ancient Town
After years of anticipation, the Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou Railway is expected to be operational by the end of this year, introducing a new railway station to Liantang Town in Qingpu.
Located in Liantang Town, the station features two platforms and four tracks, covering a building area of approximately 4,500 ㎡.
Though Liantang Railway Station may not see the bustling traffic of Hongqiao Railway Station, it marks a significant leap forward for the thousand-year-old town of Liantang.
The main structure of the station has been fully completed, and interior finishing work is underway, with plans to have the station ready for operation by year-end. Once open, it will be even more convenient for Shanghai residents to travel to nearby destinations like Huzhou and Nanxun.
Shanghai East Railway Station
Shanghai's Second Largest Railway Station
As one of Shanghai's four major railway hubs, Shanghai East Railway Station has garnered significant attention since construction began.
It is located about 10 km from Shanghai Disneyland and close to Pudong International Airport. This world-class transport hub will cover a total area of approximately 1 million ㎡, with 14 platforms and 30 tracks. Once completed, it will be Shanghai's second largest railway station, second only to Hongqiao Hub.
What sets Shanghai East Railway Station apart is its groundbreaking design, featuring several firsts in its planning.
It will be the first station to integrate national and suburban rail services into a unified operation. It will also introduce aviation modules to a railway station for the first time. Additionally, it will be the first to implement urban development above the throat area.
Moreover, Shanghai East Railway Station will support an extensive transit network, connecting five suburban lines, two urban lines, and multiple regional lines.
In collaboration with Pudong International Airport, Shanghai East Railway Station aims to create a transport hub, known as the Oriental Hub.
Shanghai Songjiang Railway Station
Expansion of the Old Station
Shanghai Songjiang Railway Station is an expansion of the former Songjiang South Railway Station. The early Songjiang South Railway Station had a station building of only 7,800 ㎡. However, in Shanghai's 2035 Master Plan, it was designated as a city-level transport hub.
According to the plan, the development of Shanghai Songjiang Station will cover approximately 1.3 million ㎡, making it the third largest high-speed railway hub in Shanghai.
The new station building is located on the north side of the old one, connected by a newly constructed platform elevated 10 meters above ground.
The new station building will cover about 60,000 ㎡. Once completed, Shanghai Songjiang Railway Station will expand to 9 platforms and 23 tracks, with an expected annual passenger volume of over 20 million people.
Shanghai Songjiang Railway Station is on track to complete construction by November 30 of this year.
Shanghai Baoshan Railway Station
China's Second Double-Deck Railway Station
Located in Yangxing Town, Baoshan, Shanghai Baoshan Railway Station is set to become a key hub in northern Shanghai. With a total investment of approximately RMB 156 billion, the station will serve part of a 554.6-km railway line, including a 52-km segment within Shanghai.
The development area of the station is between 500,000 and 600,000 ㎡, with 8 platforms and 18 tracks. Construction is scheduled to begin this year, and once completed, Shanghai Baoshan Railway Station will be the fourth largest railway station in Shanghai and the largest in the northern part of the city.
According to the latest design renderings, the station will feature a hexagonal structure and employ a stacked layout, making it China's second double-deck railway station. The Huzhou-Chongqing-Chengdu high-speed railway will run on elevated tracks, while the Shanghai-Nantong Railway will operate below ground.
Baoshan Station will also serve as a four-in-one hub, integrating the Huzhou-Chongqing-Chengdu Railway, the Shanghai-Nantong Railway, a reserved express line, and Metro Line 19.
In the future, Shanghai Baoshan Railway Station is expected to handle 148,000 passengers per day, with an annual passenger volume of 54 million.
Shanghai Chongming Railway Station
Chongming's First Railway Station
The first railway station in Chongming is moving forward, with preliminary planning completed and construction expected to begin this year.
The latest renderings and planning details reveal that Shanghai Chongming Railway Station will be located in Chengqiao Town, just 1.5 km from Chongming's main urban area. The station will cover an area of approximately 10,000 ㎡, with 2 platforms and 6 tracks.
Designed with a striking wing structure, the station symbolizes Chongming's leap into the future.
In terms of infrastructure, Shanghai Chongming Railway Station will include facilities for buses, taxis, and vehicles, ensuring connectivity between the high-speed rail and other transportations. A surrounding plaza will also be developed, contributing to the green and eco-friendly design of the hub.
The Baoshan to Chongming section of the Huzhou-Chongqing-Chengdu High-Speed Railway is scheduled to open in 2029, with full line completion expected by the end of 2030. By then, Chongming residents will be able to reach Qidong or Baoshan in just over ten minutes, making holiday travel from downtown Shanghai to Chongming much faster and easier.
