Dear Diary,
This morning was special for me as I strolled to a nearby village, which is about a half-hour's walk from my home. Usually, after sending my child to kindergarten, I take a walk in a nearby park where some seniors practice Tai Chi, others take strolls, and some moms push their children in strollers.
To enjoy a moment of offline life filled with peace and quiet, I decided to leave my home and wander aimlessly along the riverbank, which leads to the old village with houses built of bricks, lined up facing fields. Along the way, diverse sounds blended together: the joyful chirping of birds, along with the noise of passing cars. Together, they created a symphony of natural music. Listening to it not only soothed me but also transported me to a serene world. In addition to the sounds, the scenic landscape took my breath away when the red and orange leaves of the maple trees appeared before me. The beauty was beyond words and drew my attention, making me pause and admire it. The whole world seemed to slow down as I focused on those leaves, appreciating them as if I were studying a famous painting. After encountering those breathtaking leaves, I continued my walk and arrived at the old village.
Only a few old houses, likely built at least 20 years ago, remain there. Sounds seemed absent, except for the chirping of birds overhead. It is rare for me to be in such a tranquil place, as I have grown used to the hustle and bustle of the city, where the noise from transportation is normal. This village is the only one that has survived the rapid development and massive expansion of the city. I'm afraid that in ten years, it too will be replaced by skyscrapers.
The more advanced technology becomes, the busier people are. This is a harsh and unjust reality. People are gradually becoming slaves to a variety of consumables and working tirelessly to achieve a rather stable life. What’s worse, few of us live in peace and quiet. Instead, most of us are consumed by our jobs. Yet, a sense of security still eludes us. It seems as if we are always fighting for an unknown and brighter future. Ironically, we have only one life, and we waste it on things we do not like or things we are forced to do. That beautiful tomorrow always seems just out of reach.
To live a long and healthy life, some choose to work out every day. For me, though, it doesn’t seem like a wise investment. Why spend so much time exercising to extend my life? In fact, I can make better use of that time by doing things I truly enjoy. Taking a stroll is a way to escape from my time in front of the computer and cellphone, ensuring I have enough moments for offline life and outdoor activities.
I do not want to be a bird trapped in a virtual world. Instead, I prefer to bask in the winter sunshine and breathe in the fragrance of the earth and unknown plants.
Your friend,
Edison
