On December 6, 2024, students from the AP Environmental Science (APES) and AP Biology (APBIO) classes conducted an enriching annual ecosystem field study at Shenzhen's Fairy Lake Botanical Garden. Guided by professional instructors, the students explored the mysteries of flora and fauna across various ecological environments.
In the "Tropical Rainforest" shade plant zone of Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, students learned about the evolutionary history of ferns, such as the staghorn fern, and experienced the unique charm of cycads, known as "living fossils." Here, they not only gained knowledge about niche distribution within tropical rainforests but also witnessed how these ancient plants have maintained their distinctiveness over time.
At Egret Island, students enjoyed the excitement of birdwatching and observed the habits of various bird species. From the diving grebe to the vibrantly feathered kingfisher, the standing Chinese pond heron, the hunched great egrets and little egrets, and the beautiful red-billed blue magpie flying to and fro—each bird showcased its unique survival skills and beauty.
Finally, students ventured into the desert plant zone, which resembled the Little Prince’s planet. Working in groups, they searched for specific species and studied the survival strategies of these plants in extreme conditions. Through presentations of their findings, students shared unique plants and their adaptations, deepening their understanding of the complexity and diversity of the natural world.
This field study not only expanded students' scientific knowledge but also strengthened their understanding of and responsibility toward ecological conservation. It provided an opportunity for students to step out of the classroom and explore nature hands-on, sparking their interest in environmental protection. This field study was an unforgettable learning experience, allowing students to personally witness the complexity and beauty of the natural world. We hope this activity plants a seed that will grow into more environmental actions in their future studies and lives.
Looking forward to our next journey of exploration, let us continue to protect our planet and witness more natural wonders together.
