Mr. Luke

Mr. Malachy

Zhaoqing Triathlon

Highlights

The Zhaoqing Triathlon Series took place on November 16th and 17th, showcasing impressive performances from both students and teachers. The event featured a junior triathlon on Saturday and adult races on Sunday.

A triathlon is a demanding multi-discipline event comprising swimming, cycling, and running, with transitions between each leg being a crucial aspect. Competitors must seamlessly shift from swimming to cycling, referred to as Transition 1 (T1), and then from cycling to running, all while racing against the clock and adhering to strict rules. Timing chips ensure accurate tracking of each participant’s performance.

On Saturday, Grade 8-6 student Zimo Fu competed in the junior triathlon, which involved a 500-meter open water swim, a 10-kilometer bike ride, and a 2.5-kilometer run, totaling 13 kilometers. Zimo demonstrated remarkable determination and secured 8th place in her age group.

This is my second time entering a triathlon competition, Competitions can be chaotic. For instance, during the swimming portion, I got kicked in the face by a grown man, which cost me precious time.

But once the adrenaline kicks in, you become focused and push through. Even when your body is tired, your mind stays alert and determined.

On Sunday, teachers Malachy Sheeran and Luke Lane represented the adult category with stellar performances

Luke participated in the half-Ironman distance, an extraordinary feat for his first-ever triathlon. Covering a total of 113 kilometers—1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling, and a 21.1-kilometer run—Luke completed the race in an impressive 6 hours and 30 minutes.

Mr. Luke

As the sun rose, its golden rays illuminated the serene lake surrounded by Zhaoqing’s majestic mountains, Standing by the water’s edge, I felt a mix of excitement and anticipation for my first half-Ironman triathlon. Every stroke through the water filled me with exhilaration, as the stunning scenery blurred into a symphony of colors and sounds.

The cycling leg was invigorating as the wind rushed past me while I sped through lush, winding roads lined with enthusiastic spectators. The run felt like a living painting, with each step etched in sweat and determination. Crossing the finish line was a whirlwind of emotions—pride, joy, and a profound sense of accomplishment that I’ll cherish forever.

Malachy, a seasoned triathlete and coach of the Tsinglan Triathlon team, competed in the Olympic distance triathlon, which included a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, and a 10-kilometer run. He showcased his expertise by securing 4th place in his age category, narrowly missing 3rd place by a mere 20 seconds.

Mr. Malachy

It was a fantastic course with good water conditions, although a bit overcrowded,The bike course was fast and scenic, but dangerous crosswinds added an extra challenge.

My transitions could have been quicker, but overall, I’m happy with my performance. Crossing the finish line brought a wave of exhilaration, and I’m already looking forward to the next event.

Completing a triathlon brings a profound sense of achievement and fosters camaraderie among athletes.

As this sport gains momentum in China, it promises an exciting future for enthusiasts and competitors alike

The Zhaoqing Triathlon Series highlighted not only the dedication and resilience of its participants but also the growing passion for this challenging yet rewarding sport.
