Peer Review

Recently, Grade 6 science curriculum has explored its focus on China’s King Volcanoes — Changbai Mountain. This majestic mountain, which is renowned for its breathtaking volcanic landscapes, is also the source of three major rivers in Northeast China. Its unique geographical location and abundant natural resources make it an ideal subject for interdisciplinary study.
This project integrates knowledge from diverse fields, including plate tectonics, volcanic formation, ecological environments, and human geography. Through collaborative group work and role-based responsibilities, students have explored the unique beauty of Changbai Mountain from different perspectives.
Module1
3D Reconstruction of
the King of Volcanoes
Key Question
How were China’s King of Volcanoes and its waterfalls and hot springs formed?
In this part, students work in teams to create a 3D model of Changbai Mountain by studying simulation, maps and gathering information.
Building on their foundational knowledge and understanding of plate boundaries, types of volcanoes, tectonic movements, subduction zones, hot spot volcanoes, and Earth’s internal structure, students explored how volcanic activity generates geothermal resources, which in turn form the majestic waterfalls and hot springs of Changbai Mountain.
Module2
Simulating a Volcanic Eruption
Key Question
How can we safely simulate the dramatic effects of a volcanic eruption?
After students have completed their 3D models, they conducted a hands-on volcanic eruption experiment. This activity not only demonstrated the power of volcanic eruptions but also tests the functionality of their models. The magma chamber design, volcanic craters, and the choice of materials all shows the affect the experiment’s demonstration, this deepen their understanding of volcanic structures through practical application.
Module3
Interdisciplinary Exploration
01
Earth Science Perspective:
Unveiling the Secrets of Changbai Mountain’s Volcano
With the Earth Science curriculum this semester, students delve into the mechanisms behind the formation of Changbai Mountain’s volcano. This exploration reinforces key concepts in Earth Science while fostering inquiry and collaborative skills.
02
Ecology Perspective:
Investigating Changbai Mountain’s Biodiversity
In contrast to the subtropical monsoon climate of southern China, Changbai Mountain, situated in northern China and forming the border between China and North Korea, presents strikingly different climatic conditions. This has sparked students’ keen interest in the region’s unique flora, fauna, and biodiversity.
03
Environmental Science Perspective:
Assessing Human Impact on Changbai Mountain
From the perspective of environmental and human geography, students examine Changbai Mountain’s cultural significance and tourism resources. This exploration highlights the mountain’s unique natural value while focusing on the profound impact of human activities on this precious natural heritage.
Module4
Practicing Academic Presentations
Key Question
How can we deliver a compelling academic presentation?
Students refine their presentation skills through every step, from selecting information and organizing content to rehearsing their speeches. This process allows them to share their research findings effectively while improving their ability to communicate ideas clearly and persuasively. Students gain confidence and public speaking skills through this module.
In the Peer Review session, students are both active evaluators and constructive suggesters. They take on the responsibility to identify and appreciate their peers' strengths while also generously offering feedback aimed at stimulating reflection and self-improvement.
Field Expedition: Uncovering the Mysteries of Changbai Mountain
This winter break, 38 middle school students will embark on a unique interdisciplinary learning journey—a scientific expedition to Changbai Mountain.
More than an adventure in nature, this trip is an opportunity to merge scientific knowledge with hands-on exploration.
On this remarkable land, students will step in the vastness of nature with their footsteps, capture the brilliance of science with their eyes, and feel the power of knowledge with their hearts.
