Weaving Rural Territories: Housing and Communities
Rural areas are facing significant challenges, including depopulation, aging populations, inadequate infrastructure, and the erosion of cultural identity, all exacerbated by the pressures of urbanization. Despite these obstacles, rural regions remain vital, with their revitalization becoming increasingly essential for future sustainability.
These territories are not obsolete, but rather integral to preserving the unique ways of life, histories, and landscapes that contribute to the identity and heritage of nations. As migration to cities continues, rural communities risk losing visibility and influence, weakening their essential roles in food production, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation.
Contemporary architecture plays a crucial role in addressing these challenges, offering innovative solutions that blend technology, tradition, and sustainability. By reshaping the connection between community, space, and landscape, modern architectural interventions aim to reverse rural depopulation and create stronger ties between residents and their environments.
With the process of urbanization, rural areas in Asia, Europe, and Latin America are facing the challenges of population decline and aging, despite their rich natural and cultural heritage. In response to these challenges and to promote international cooperation, China, Spain, and Mexico are jointly hosting the exhibition "Textures and Longitude: Weaving New Local Communities." This exhibition reflects on the intersection of architecture and rural communities across different cultural backgrounds, exploring how the lines of latitude in architecture and the lines of longitude in communities interweave and empower one another. It aims to investigate the dynamic relationship between local communities and architectural proposals, thereby inspiring constructive dialogue on rural development.
The exhibition features 18 different rural construction practice cases from architectural studios in Spain, China, and Mexico, each significant to its community on a socio-cultural level. It examines how architecture and rural communities intertwine to generate momentum for rural development.

Content of the Exhibition
- Six Sections of the Exhibition -
1. Connecting the Community
Projects that share a strong commitment to creating communitycentered spaces that foster social interaction, education, and cultural engagement. Each project integrates local materials, reflecting the heritage of its surroundings while combining modern design elements. Sustainability is a core value, with energy-efficient building practices and environmentally friendly materials. Designs are flexible and allow for a variety of uses, from daily community gatherings to cultural and educational activities. By combining local identity with adaptable, multi-use spaces, these projects foster a sense of belonging and strengthen community ties.
2. Community Heart
The projects in this group share a vision: developing public spaces that become the social center of their communities. Through actions that are sensitive and respectful of their surroundings, these proposals take advantage of the potential of underused buildings, existing infrastructure, or local social relations to promote dynamic meeting places, where communities congregate, interact, and enhance their sense of belonging. These projects perceive public space as a space for exchange and connection, where beyond functional requirements, the interaction of daily activities, exchange between generations, and the transmission of communal knowledge are encouraged.
3. Movement Catalysts
These projects encourage physical exercise and cultural exchange by creating multifunctional public spaces that combine sports, cultural, and recreational areas. Each intervention creates dynamic places that encourage social interaction, promoting the cohesion and revitalization of their communities. With designs that take advantage of local materials and seek solutions to face their challenging natural environment, these projects not only promote social well-being but also reinforce the sense of community belonging by encouraging daily encounters around stimulating activities for their inhabitants.
1. Renewing the Tradition
These proposals revitalize local architectural traditions by combining traditional materials and techniques with contemporary approaches. Through a dialogue between past and present, these projects respect cultural identity while innovating construction processes and integrating vernacular typologies, emerging technologies, and participatory methods. These initiatives adapt to present needs without losing their sense of place. The results preserve the heritage while transforming it, strengthening the relationship between communities and their origins, and promoting resilient and sustainable growth.
5.Education and Recreation
These educational and recreational projects in rural areas of Spain, China, and Mexico reveal architecture that transcends its primary function, becoming drivers of community growth. By designing adaptable spaces around gathering elements, these proposals promote social interaction and flexible learning. They ingeniously incorporate local cultural components and innovative construction techniques, responding to unique challenges such as climate, limited resources, demographic changes, or natural disasters. In addition to hosting multiple activities, these spaces strengthen the social fabric, revitalizing their communities through inspiring educational and recreational environments rooted in their context.
6.Life and Memory
These projects demonstrate how architecture, in collaboration with local communities, can honor the past while nurturing the present. Organized around communal spaces such as gardens, galleries, and courtyards, these designs promote social interaction and preserve collective memory. By integrating local and traditional elements, the proposals respect the cultural and physical contexts. Attention to the specific needs of users, whether elderly residents or entire communities, is reflected in accessible and welcoming solutions. These projects transcend mere functionality, creating environments that celebrate life, dignify old age, and bridge generations while preserving the essence and identity of each place.
