In 2010, the dormitory featured two gardens: an L-shaped one to the north and another at the southern end. A living room was positioned between the northern garden and a bedroom. Adjacent to this bedroom, in the southeast corner, was a kitchen, which was connected to another sleeping area. A third bedroom occupied a central location next to a bathroom, which was accessible from all parts of the dormitory.
Since then, while the bathroom, main entrance, and three original bedrooms have remained unchanged, other areas have seen significant alterations. The L-shaped garden was reduced to a rectangular form to accommodate two additional bedrooms, replacing the living room. The kitchen has been repurposed as a combined cooking and social space, reflecting a shift in functionality. Additionally, an en-suite bathroom has been added adjacent to the southeast bedroom, offering enhanced convenience. Finally, the southern garden has been entirely replaced with a car parking area, maximizing space for practical use.

On one hand, the environmental repercussions of the fashion industry are undeniable.The production of clothing, especially fast fashion, is resource-intensive, requiring substantial amounts of water and energy. For instance, cotton farming depletes water resources, and textile dyeing is one of the largest contributors to water pollution globally. Moreover, the push for constantly updated collections encourages consumers to discard perfectly wearable clothes, leading to increased textile waste in landfills. This “throwaway culture,” driven by aggressive marketing campaigns, indeed makes the fashion industry culpable for significant environmental harm.
However, the consumer's role in this equation cannot be overlooked.The fashion industry may promote trends, but it is ultimately consumer behavior that sustains the demand for ever-changing styles. Additionally, blaming the entire industry overlooks recent efforts to mitigate its environmental footprint. Many brands have introduced sustainable practices, such as using recycled fabrics, reducing water consumption, and promoting second-hand clothing through circular economy models. These measures demonstrate that the industry is gradually moving toward sustainability.
In conclusion, while the fashion industry has undoubtedly contributed to environmental degradation, the onus of responsibility is shared with consumers who indulge in overconsumption. Addressing this issue requires a concerted effort from both sides: the industry should further embrace eco-friendly innovations, and consumers must adopt mindful purchasing habits. Only through such collaboration can we reduce the ecological damage caused by our pursuit of fashion.
