BYD Auto is approaching, and the reshuffle of the automobile industry has been rolled from China to the world

Editor:Lucien

According to recent overseas data, BYD, China's largest automaker, surpassed Honda and Nissan in the world's new car sales in April ~ June 2024, and jumped to the seventh place in the world.

BYD's global sales in the last quarter were 980,000 units, an increase of up to 40% year-on-year, which is particularly sensitive and eye-catching in the context of the sluggish global economic recovery. In the increase in BYD's global sales, overseas sales increased by about three times to 105,000 units, which played a significant role in driving sales, and also made overseas car companies feel an obvious crisis.

BYD's sales on a quarterly basis surpassed Honda, which fell 5% worldwide to 920,000 units, for the first time, and is approaching Ford, one of the three major United States auto giants with 1.14 million shipments. And under the existing development trend, the possibility of further breaking the industry ranking in the future is very high.

The overseas auto industry believes that BYD, driven by low-cost pure electric vehicles (EVs), is approaching the "Big Three" of large United States automobile companies and has begun to break the industry ranking; The scale of shipments is comparable to that of large automakers in Japan, the United States, and Europe, so it has become a top priority for overseas automakers to respond to the rapid growth of Chinese auto companies.

In addition to BYD, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a major Chinese company, also rose to 11th place last quarter, and Chery Automobile also came to 15th place, and its presence in overseas markets is improving. In the first half of this year, China's automobile exports reached 2.79 million units, 780,000 units higher than Japan.

In recent years, with the expansion of the industrial scale of China's manufacturing, Chinese mainland has gained a comprehensive iterative speed advantage in material technology and process innovation, thus allowing China to achieve rapid development in the field of new energy and cost the global production capacity centralized supply base. In 2023, Chinese mainland's exports of electric vehicles, lithium batteries, and photovoltaic products will increase by nearly 30%, of which the production and sales of new energy electric vehicles will account for more than 60% of the world.

Car companies such as BYD, Changan Automobile, Great Wall Motor and Geely Automobile have taken export business as an important growth point for the company's future sales, and have continuously strengthened and accelerated the layout of overseas markets through vehicle exports, KD model exports, acquisition of overseas brands, and overseas factory construction.

Chinese car companies are also taking the ASEAN market as a breakthrough point, widely deploying electric vehicle production capacity in various countries, further squeezing the market share of Japanese and Korean brands that have been entrenched in the ASEAN market for many years. For example, in Thailand, where Japanese cars account for 80% of the market, Honda will cut production capacity in half, in addition to Suzuki's decision to withdraw from production.

Since the beginning of this year, the construction of electric vehicles in Chinese mainland in Southeast Asia has accelerated. Great Wall Motor established a Rayong new energy plant in Thailand, with an initial planned annual production capacity of 80,000 units; Changan Automobile launched its first overseas base, the Thailand New Energy Base, and will put into operation a manufacturing base in Rayong Province, Thailand, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 units, in 2025, and expand its production capacity to 200,000 units in the future. SAIC has successively disclosed the layout information in Indonesia, Thailand and other regions; GAC Aion, a subsidiary of the GAC Group, is completing the construction of its plant in Lo Vinh Phuc, Thailand, which will be able to produce 50,000 vehicles per year.

BYD, which is a major focus of overseas automakers, has launched its first full-scale vehicle plant overseas in Thailand, plans to build plants in Hungary and Brazil, and is considering production in Mexico.

In ASEAN, BYD's Thailand plant has recently been officially put into operation, with an annual production capacity of about 150,000 units, including the production of four major processes and parts for the whole vehicle, and can create about 10,000 jobs.

BYD also plans to invest in the establishment of an electric vehicle assembly plant in Cambodia, with an estimated annual assembly capacity of 20,000 units. At the same time, the industrial park "Subang Smart City" in Indonesia has been selected as an electric vehicle factory, which covers an area of more than 108 hectares and is expected to start operations in January 2026.

BYD's approach has made the European and American markets react very fiercely. Fearing the impact on domestic industries, the two markets are becoming more wary of Chinese companies. The United States has raised punitive tariffs on Chinese-made EVs to 100%. Canada is also discussing tariffs on Chinese EVs, and the European Union (EU) has imposed temporary additional tariffs on Chinese EVs since July, and on August 20, the final plan for additional tariffs of up to 36.3% was announced, and a final decision will be made after a vote.

In order to cope with these trade barriers, BYD decided to build a new factory in Turkey, which can avoid additional EU tariffs, produce locally and export to the EU to cope with EU tariffs, and also look for third-party markets in the Americas that can circumvent United States and Canada tariffs, and build new production bases.

Overseas auto industry insiders believe that if Chinese car companies represented by BYD establish EV pure electric vehicle supply chains in various countries, the blow to other auto companies will be more obvious.

Overseas car companies also believe that Chinese auto companies not only have mastered the complete production technology of electric vehicles in the manufacturing field, but also have the sales strength to rival the Japanese, American and European auto giants in market promotion.

The Chinese-funded enterprises represented by BYD Auto are approaching step by step, and a major reshuffle that has swept the automobile industry is rolling from the Chinese market to the world.
