On October 30th, a group of QSI volunteers made up of teachers and staff traveled to Shenzhen airport to collect and welcome five visiting schools for the ACAMIS Blue Division U19 Volleyball Championships, which featured three days of action as teams competed for the biggest prize in international sports in China. With schools traveling from Beijing, Shanghai, and Suzhou, it promised to be an event that would live long in the minds of our student athletes. After months of planning and preparation, the day for ACAMIS 2024 has finally arrived.
As a member of ACAMIS (Association of China and Mongolia International Schools), QSI Shenzhen is committed to fielding both a men’s and women’s team in each of the core sports throughout the school calendar: volleyball, basketball, and soccer. With this commitment comes the responsibility of hosting our division peers every two years. The goal of ACAMIS sporting events is to promote athletic competition and camaraderie among international schools in the region. These events aim to encourage participation by fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and inviting students to engage in various sports. They also seek to build community by strengthening relationships among students, coaches, and schools, thereby promoting cultural exchange and friendship. For the first time in the school's history, QSI Shenzhen was glad to welcome the Blue Division school members.
The first day of action saw all schools arrive early at the venue, and the opening ceremony commenced. Rich Howard, Athletic Director, and Don Hale, Head Director of Instruction, gave welcoming speeches before the QSI Secondary band started the party atmosphere with their volleyball-inspired song “Flying High.” The opening ceremony concluded with the captains of each of the participating schools signing the official game ball, indicating their intent to embody the spirit of ACAMIS over the three days of competition, before Mr. Rob Clarke, division chair, served the first ball of ACAMIS, declaring the event officially open.
The first day of action saw a dream start for both the QSI boys' and girls' volleyball teams. Our boys played the inaugural match of the tournament, achieving a 2-0 win over Dulwich College Suzhou, and later backing it up with victories over YCIS Qingdao and QISS Sharks. After a tough season, it was the QSI girls' team that shone on the first day, winning their two opening matches before raising the roof of the gym by taking down the tournament favorites and reigning champions, CIS Beijing, in a 2-1 victory, marking their second three-set match victory of the day. Roared on by the boys' team and the QSI faithful, the way in which our girls secured this victory was emphatic, accomplished with skill, class, and a lot of heart!
The fairytale beginning for the host girls' team continued into the second day, with two more three-set victories that took Coaches Joey and May, along with their girls, to the top of the table at the end of pool play. It was a tougher day for the boys' team as the competition intensified, resulting in defeats to YCIS Pudong and CIS Beijing, leaving our boys third in the table and setting up a rematch the next day against Beijing in the semifinal. However, it was a Friday that ended in tears and heartbreak; our girls, having played four more sets of volleyball than any other team, could not replicate their heroics in the semifinals. Despite rallying, they came out on the losing side of a 2-1 loss, leading to a bronze medal match on the final day.
On the final day of competition, it concluded with a double bronze medal match for both QSI teams. While our girls lost to Dulwich Suzhou, our boys' team refused to accept fourth place and stormed back from losing the first set to secure third place. In an emotional final day of action, it was incredible to see how our boys' and girls' teams continued to support each other throughout the tournament, as well as the noise and atmosphere created by other teams and the QSI support. The boys' championship was won by YCIS Pudong, while the girls' reigning champions, CISB, retained their crown, although it is worth mentioning that they won’t be forgetting their pool play loss to the QSI girls anytime soon!
At a little past two o’clock on Saturday, Nov 2nd, it was time to pass on the ACAMIS flame as the event concluded with the awards ceremony. A special congratulations to John and Eric , who were awarded “All ACAMIS” honors for the men’s event, while Nicole and Rebecca collected the same accolades for the women’s team. The signed ball, which held the spirit of ACAMIS, was passed from one side of the gym through all teams to the other, where it was caught by Mr. Rob Clarke, who takes the spirit of ACAMIS back to Qingdao, where all schools will reconvene for part two and the Blue Division basketball event in early 2025.
