Last weekend became the second “Super Saturday” of sports for the month of October as more than seventy-five Dragon athletes aged 6 to 17 years old were in action across multiple sports, with action on the soccer field and in the pool.
Saturday morning started very early for our swim team as they headed out in the early hours of the morning to AISG in Guangzhou for the Guangdong Swim invitational. Our swim team had an exceptional day in the pool, as one of the smallest teams they placed fifth overall which was a remarkable exception, bringing home 36 ribbons and 16 first place finishes across an array of different events. A combined team of thirteen athletes from middle school and high school had a successful day, with James Liu, setting four pool record in the process, our boys relay team taking first, and some of our younger swimmers making debut performances a highlight. A big thanks to Coaches Sharyn Abbes and Coach Amare McPherson for their successful start to the campaign.

As one sport begins, another is reaching its conclusion, as is the case for our middle school soccer teams as they head into the conclusion of their season. Our boys and girls travelled to BSG in Guangzhou for the PRC blue division finals. Our girls, winning their game on penalties, couldn’t replicate it a second time in the bronze medal match, coming a commendable fourth place. However, it was the QSI boys team, fueled by a turbulent start to the season that sought to end things their way, and that they did.
In exceptional fashion, they dismantled ISNS 4-0 in their opening game, before steamrolling their way into the final by also beating ISD by a similar margin 3-0. Confidence has proved key for these boys this season, in one which can only be described as a journey of growth, and in the final the boys became men. After leading for much of the game and with four minutes on the clock, CIS struck an equalizer to send the game to penalties. CIS stepped up, and Paddy Murphy saved down to his right-hand side, before Ethan Chen made it advantage QSI with a cool converted penalty. Paddy Murphy repeated his heroics, saving the second, before Dave Kim, stepped up to the spot. Pressure, what pressure? Dave drove the ball home sending the coaches and team into scenes of jubilation, as QSI boys brought home the championship trophy.
The weekend action didn’t stop on the road. Locally at SIS Bay campus, it was a first run out of the year for the QSI Young Dragons. 36 students aged 6 to 10 years old, who have been training hard in the YD academy program took to the field to face off against ISNS and SIS youth academies. This day was all about participation and growth, and a chance for our younger athletes to feel a real game situation, and as such no results were record, with the only goal that counted being that of a memorable day, and that it was, leaving students and parents already eager for the next edition of tournament football next month.

Secondary sports this week sees the end of the volleyball season come to an exciting end as QSI Shenzhen welcomes 5 schools from Beijing, Suzhou, Shanghai, and Qingdao for five days of action. On Monday night our boys team, who held on to make the playoffs this year, finished the year in fourth place overall. A tough first game against the undefeated top seeds proved too much, and despite a late push, ended 2-0, as did the final game for third place. With one eye on ACAMIS and tournament style play being a strength of our teams, we are looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish later this week!
