Tomorrow is Singapore’s 59th birthday!
Since Saturday is China’s Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d show some love to my home country by sharing some of my favourites that soothe my homesickness whenever it creeps up in Shanghai.

Ginger
Nestled in a charming three-story historic terrace in Xuhui, Ginger is a modern Asian bistro started by Singaporean Betty Ng 19 years ago.
Calm and collected with creativity and style coursing through her veins, the Le Cordon Bleu alum and mom of one curates her menu and her interiors with thought and care.
The result: a playful melting pot of pan-Asian cuisines and decor inspired by her Singaporean roots and a decade spent in Tokyo.
Customers return for perennial favourites like laksa and satay. I love their outdoor seating when it’s beautifully lit up with candles in the evenings.

Eden Kitchen
Eden Kitchen is a home-based delivery service offering Singaporean dishes started by Singaporean lawyer and mom of two Mok Siew Lin who moved to Shanghai 19 years ago.
Siew Lin knows her food and attempts to recreate a taste of home that has garnered a loyal following.
She has since returned to law and her business is now run by her Ayi, Xiao Yu, who was her right-hand woman.
Siew Lin still does all the taste tests before giving the go-ahead.
My husband is a big fan of her Bak Chor Mee (minced pork noodles).

Nectar
Started in 2018 by Singaporean founder Cher Lim and her business partner Billy Lee, Nectar's business saw rising success when Nonya desserts were on the roll in China with the success of the Chinese adaptation of Singaporean drama, My Little Nonya.
Today, Nectar continues to draw both local and southeast Asian customers to their café as they pride themselves in using fresh ingredients. Their famous pandan chiffon cakes are made with fresh pandan leaf juices.
I love to impress my guests with their signature afternoon tea set that is a treat to the eyes and palate.

8 interesting facts about Singapore
1. The Singapore passport is the most powerful in the world with access to 195 countries visa-free.
2. All Singaporean sons must return home to serve the military for 2 years when they turn 18 years old.

TTT, which stands for Thursday Tai Tai, is a support group for Singaporean and Malaysian wives in Shanghai.
This year they celebrate their 15th anniversary.
This tight-knit group started by meeting every Thursday for lunch hence the name.
They are known for their outrageous themed parties. Lately, the focus has shifted to dinner gatherings and travelling around China.
The group’s guiding mantra is playfulness and kindness because life is short and time in Shanghai is even shorter.

Everyone knows Tiger Balm – the world-famous remedy for pain relief from Singapore of which I am unabashedly a fan.

Sarong Kebaya is a beautiful costume traditionally worn by Nonya, also known as Peranakan Chinese in Singapore.
They are also the iconic uniform of Singapore Airlines air stewardesses since 1972.
The huge success of the Singaporean drama “My Little Nonya” in 2008 back home and China cast the mesmerizing sarong kebaya into the spotlight.
With the upcoming spin-off, “Emerald Hill”, airing in 2025, we will be sure to see another revival of this feminine heritage outfit.

I am half Peranakan (from my dad) and I grew up watching my late granny don her sarong kebaya like her uniform every day as she did everything with it - house chores, looking after her grandchildren, attending formal wedding dinners.
In her honour, I now wear sarong kebaya but with a modern spin, whenever I represent my country.

Betty Ng毕业于蓝带烹饪艺术学院，她冷静沉稳，极富创意和风格，精心设计了餐厅的菜单和室内装饰。
因此，餐厅融合了她源自新加坡的背景，以及在东京十年生活的经历，从而形成了别具趣味的泛亚洲美食和装饰风格。
顾客们经常回来品尝叻沙和沙嗲等常年受欢迎的菜品。我特别喜欢他们的户外座位，晚上点上蜡烛时非常漂亮。

今年，该团体成立 15 周年。
这个联系紧密的团体最初是因每周四聚餐而得名。

沙笼可芭雅（Sarong Kebaya）是娘惹（在新加坡也被称为土生华人）穿着的一种美丽的传统服饰。
自1972年以来，它们也成为新加坡航空公司空姐的标志性制服。
2008 年，新加坡电视剧《小娘惹》在本国以及中国取得的巨大成功，使迷人的沙笼可芭雅成为众人瞩目的焦点。
随着衍生剧《小娘惹之翡翠山》将于 2025 年上映，我们肯定会看到这种女性传统服饰的再度复兴。

我是半个土生华人（源于我的父亲），从小，我看到我的奶奶每天穿着她的沙笼可芭雅，就像穿着制服一样，她无论做家务、照顾孙子，还是参加正式的婚宴，都穿着它。
奶奶去世后，为了纪念她，现在每当我展示新加坡形象时，我都会穿着现代风格的沙笼可芭雅。
