Ms Ibeodo,
Mr Hobourn,

Dr Kirk,

Letter from the Headteacher
Mrs Jane Arden
Headteacher
Dear Parents,
At LEH Foshan, extra-curricular activities (ECAs) play a crucial role in enriching our students' educational experience, embodying the core values of our 8Cs: communication, commitment, curiosity, collaboration, craftsmanship, compassion, confidence, and creativity. With over 150 unique ECAs, our programme offers students invaluable opportunities to develop skills, explore interests, and nurture friendships in an environment that encourages personal growth and discovery. Later this month, we are excited to host an ECA Fair where parents will have the chance to explore the full range of activities we offer, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of this extraordinary part of school life. Keep an eye out for more details, and we look forward to welcoming you to this inspiring event!
Best Regards
Mrs Arden

Year 7 Educational Visit to the Nanfeng Kiln and Shiwan Ceramics Museum
This week, the Year 7 students, embarked on an educationally enriching school trip to Nanfeng Kiln and Shiwan Ceramic Museum, immersing themselves in the vibrant world of Shiwanware ceramics. The journey began with the students having lots of fun with hands-on experiences, at the clay pot pottery class, shaping clay into various designs of pots and plates and gaining insights into the meticulous process of making pottery. The air was filled with creativity as young minds explored their artistic talents, fostering a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance of ceramic craftsmanship.
Year 7 students then explored the Shiwan Ceramic Museum, a treasure trove showcasing the evolution of Shiwan pottery. Students marvelled at the diverse array of ancient and contemporary ceramic masterpieces, learning about the historical roots and cultural stories behind each artifact.
The museum visit served as a living history lesson, connecting classroom teachings with tangible artifacts. The student drew sketches and took photographs of ceramics with an under the water theme as research to support their current painting and ceramic project at school.
Our last stop was a tour of the Nanfeng Kiln, which houses two Dragon Kilns built 500 years ago in the Ming Dynasty. The kilns are still fired twice a month. Students witnessed the traditional art of pottery-making passed down through generations and are very excited to start making their own hand built ceramic sculptures in school.
Throughout the trip, the students not only honed their artistic skills but also gained a broader understanding of China's rich cultural heritage. The excursion fostered a sense of camaraderie among classmates, creating lasting memories and sparking a newfound appreciation for the delicate artistry of ceramics. As the students returned to school, their backpacks were not only filled with souvenirs but also with a deeper cultural awareness that would resonate in their studies and personal growth.
Economics and Business

Celebrating Two Years of Growth!
Over the past two years, we are proud to report significant growth in the Business and Economics department. The increasing interest in these subjects is a testament to both the relevance of the curriculum and the dedication of our students and teachers.
Business Studies: A Growing Interest
Over the past two years, we are proud to report significant growth in the Business and Economics department. The increasing interest in these subjects is a testament to both the relevance of the curriculum and the dedication of our students and teachers..
Economics: A Booming Subject
Economics has also become a favourite among our students. This year, we’ve welcomed an especially large Year 10 Economics cohort, showing that students are increasingly interested in understanding the forces that shape our world. Topics such as supply and demand are becoming household favourites, likely due to their connections to maths. The Economics curriculum is designed to be dynamic and relevant, incorporating current events and trends to help students understand the practical implications of economic theories.
Why the Growth?
The growth in these subjects can be attributed to several key factors:
Real-World Relevance: Business and Economics provide students with practical knowledge that they can apply beyond the classroom. From running a business to understanding global economics, these subjects offer invaluable life skills. Students learn to think critically and make informed decisions, skills that are essential in any career path.
Innovative Teaching: Our dedicated teachers have embraced modern teaching methods, ensuring that lessons are engaging, interactive, and aligned with current global trends. The use of technology in the classroom, such as interactive whiteboards and online resources, has enhanced the learning experience.
Career Preparation: Many students recognise that a solid understanding of Business and Economics is crucial for future success, whether they aim to start their own business or pursue a career in finance, marketing, or management.
Looking Ahead
With the department’s growth, we are excited to continue expanding and enhancing our curriculum. We aim to offer even more opportunities for students to explore Business and Economics through competitions and cross-curricular collaborations.
We look forward to another year of growth and success!
Music
by Mr Hobourn, Director of Music
On Monday 28th October, LEHF welcomed two world-class musicians to the school. Ms An Na and Mr Meidad Yehudayan performed a wonderful piano/violin concert in the Hanbury Theatre, with works by Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, John Williams and Dvorak. This was a highly impressive concert, delivered with technical expertise, extraordinary interaction between the performers, and the variety of tone and expressive shaping on both instruments was truly impressive. Many thanks to Angela W and Lucy who hosted the concert.
Following the concert, Ms An Na led a Piano Masterclass, taking students through works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, and Montsalvatge. All students played works from the ABRSM Grade 8 syllabus, or higher. Ms An Na's teaching was inspirational covering aspects of technique, fluency, and musical shaping. The students hugely benefitted from her expertise. This was Ms An Na's second visit to LEH Foshan, and she is extremely impressed by the musical talent that exists at the school.
Many congratulations to all students who took part in the masterclass: David, Alina X, Alina D, Mavis, Ryan D, Angela W, and Lucy.
Next Thursday 7th November, LEHF will once again be performing under the lights and mics of Lingnan Tiandi. The students from Secondary and Prep Schools have been working very hard, and most of the school's ensembles will feature in this concert. Please do try to come to Lingnan Tiandi next Thursday - I can promise you an exciting and dynamic concert, with a wide variety of musical styles on offer. It should be a wonderful evening of Music.
Following the long weekend, we quickly turn to the House Music Competition the following week, taking place on Founder's Day, Friday 15th November. The four houses have been preparing their songs and challenging themselves with interpreting the songs in different creative ways. Life in LEHF Music is certainly in the fast lane at the moment - much to look forward to!

House Room Halloween Decoration Competition
This year’s House Room Halloween Decoration Competition brought out incredible creativity and teamwork from all four Houses. Each House area was transformed with festive and spooky decorations, thanks to the collaborative efforts of students and their House Masters. Many of the decorations were handmade, showcasing students’ skills and craftmanship in bringing their Halloween visions to life.
Throughout Halloween, students and staff visited each House Room, enjoying the unique themes and impressive details on display. Voting was open to both students and staff, who were encouraged to vote for their favourite House — with the rule that no one could vote for their own. This added an extra level of excitement, as everyone considered the creativity and effort of their peers.
The competition was a close one, with votes spread fairly evenly across the Houses. However, Gryphon House emerged as the winner, taking the title for best-decorated House Room! A big congratulations to Gryphon, and a huge thank you to all students and House Masters who put so much effort into this year’s event. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Halloween competition and the creative surprises it will bring!
Assessment Week
by Dr Kirk, Head of Academics
Students in Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) will sit examinations in all subjects next week. This assessment period plays an important part in the first reporting cycle of the year. Parents and students have had the chance to have face-to-face discussions with teaching staff and the upcoming assessment week will be followed by a full report, highlighting progress made this term and offering suggestions as to how to improve further in the future.
More information regarding the format of each examination and specific class timetables have been distributed to parents. Students should be focusing on revision and review of their work to date, while teachers have placed revision material on class Teams to help with their preparation. Everyone should have a black ball point pen (or two), pencils, a 30 cm ruler and a rubber, along with any special equipment noted in the information sent out (e.g. a calculator for Science and Maths examinations).
Students should be looking forward to showing off what they are capable of, working to the best of their ability and, for some, practising for the first time the skills and techniques required in UK style examinations. We look forward to celebrating our students’ success, at whatever level of achievement, and wish them all the best as they prepare for the tests to come.
