Mrs Jane Arden

Mrs Arden

SUMMER

Dr Kirk

Letter from the Headteacher

Mrs Jane Arden

Headteacher

Dear Parents,

This week, within our assembly we focused on the enriching experiences that school trips offer, and why they play such a vital role in a student's education. These trips are not just about exploring new places; they are about opening minds, building resilience, and creating memories that last a lifetime. From developing cultural awareness to fostering independence, each journey provides unique opportunities for personal and academic growth.

We took the time to remind our students about the excitement of the upcoming ski trip, which promises to combine physical challenge with breathtaking scenery. We also shared more information about our trips to Spain and Borneo, both of which will immerse students in new cultures and environments. In addition, we announced a truly unique opportunity, courtesy of Trumptech, for students to study abroad in the United States and England – a chance to broaden their global perspective and build international connections.

These experiences are more than just travel; they are integral to our mission of developing well-rounded, globally aware young people. We encourage students to embrace these opportunities, knowing that the skills and friendships formed on these trips will be with them long after they return.

Have a great weekend!

Best Regards

Mrs Arden

Trip to the Foshan Theatre and Hem Museum

This week Y11, 12 and 13 Art and Design students visited the Foshan Theatre and Hem Museum where they carried out first-hand research to gather imagery and ideas to support them in the development of their IGCSE and A Level coursework. The focus of the trip was to explore structure in architecture, sculpture and paintings, which they did through making on-site sketches, taking photos, and discussion.

Design & Technology

by Mr McMahon, Head of Design

At LEH, I want the students to have a broad understanding of what Design Technology can offer, especially careerwise. It is important for the students to see the benefits of the subject in a broader sense, enabling them to look at life opportunities beyond the classroom.

This week, students at LEH have explored various aspects of Design Technology. Year 7 students are currently working on their Architecture project to produce their dream house. This project gives them the opportunity to design and model a house using cardboard, and then develop a final model which will be drawn on the computer and cut out on the laser cutter to create a final model.

Year 13 students are tackling real life design problems, using actual clients.

They have conversations to better understand the problems and how they could be solved. For instance, Konstantin is developing lighting for the school's sixth form area, considering the school's branding. By meeting with Mrs Arden, he has started to incorporate her vision into his project. Through showing her various design concepts from the past, Konstantin has been able to discuss what she likes and integrate this into his design work, where he is creatively thriving.

We are very fortunate to have Mr Spells as a technician. He is also an experienced photographer who takes photographs of the students' models to make their work look more professional when adding it to their portfolios.

The students are also using video tutorials created by Mr  McMahon and Mr Benavides, tailored to the projects they are working on. These range from Adobe Photoshop to Onshape for use with 3D printers to create their own designs.

These are industry standard computer programs, introduced to the students in their ECA programs and lessons, increasing their confidence and enabling them to further develop their designs.

Year 8 students are currently working on electronics as they build a light projection product, enhancing key workshop skills using the excellent facilities available in the design technology area.

From Year 9 to Year 12, students are introduced to key designers from the past to help with their creativity, which is an important part of the design process. By looking at different ideas, they can grow their own creativity and produce a unique final product.

SUMMER

Currently, Year 12 students have finished their lamp designs inspired by the De Stijl movement. They have examined this iconic design movement and how they could develop it into the lights they were tasked with creating.

They are now developing jewelry designs for their major project. Considering existing products and sizing is important when developing any kind of design. Next week, they will cast their designs in metal using pewter to turn their ideas into real concepts.

Understanding the design cycle process will also help students with their major projects at KS4 and KS5, which is key to their success in this subject.

Open Door Week

by Dr Kirk, Head of Academics

The first ‘Open Door’ week for all teaching staff will be held the week beginning 21st October. This offers a chance for staff to visit colleagues’ classrooms, laboratories and workshops to observe what is going on in other subject areas, reflect on the good practice that they have seen and comment on aspects of teaching that they were impressed with or could use in their own classrooms. Visits are only usually about ten minutes long, giving a snapshot of what is happening but allowing time for staff to experience several varying pedagogical approaches in the time they have free.

Staff are encouraged to observe lessons across the Prep and Secondary schools, Key Stages and subjects, hopefully coming away from the week with ideas to use in their own classes. Our Teaching and Learning policy encourages all teachers to ‘collaborate with colleagues to share best practices’ and ‘utilise a variety of teaching methods to cater to different learning styles’; Open Door week is one of the ways in which this happens. And there are prizes for the teachers who make the most visits!
