Ph.D. student openings at Drexel University

Materials Computation and Informatics Group (MCIG) in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University (https://research.coe.drexel.edu/mse/computation/, Philadelphia, USA) is looking for motivated Ph.D. students starting in September 2025. The successful candidates will receive research assistantships with full financial support. We encourage applications from highly self-motivated students with a keen interest in applying state-of-art materials simulation tools and data-science techniques to study deformation mechanisms in advanced alloys. Successful candidates should have a solid education/research background in materials science and engineering, physics, mechanics, or other related fields. Experience in computational materials modeling or code programming is preferred but not required. The research areas and interests of MCIG lie in employing computational materials modeling and simulation methods, primarily first-principles calculations, molecular dynamic/static simulations, and CALPHAD modeling, as well as data-science/statistical algorithms to rationalize the design of advanced materials by investigating the critical mechanical, thermodynamic and electronic properties.

Successful candidates will conduct research in one of the following areas:

  • Solute cluster strengthening mechanisms in light-weight alloys.

  • Dislocation behavior in compositionally complex alloys.

To express your interest in joining the group as a Ph.D. student, please email your CV and a short cover letter to Dr. Yong-Jie Hu (yh593"at"drexel.edu).

About the MSE department of Drexel:

Located in an exciting urban environment, the MSE department of Drexel University has rapidly expanded during the past 10 years; consisting of 14 faculty, ~130 undergraduate and over ~80 graduate students working in research directions including nanomaterials, electronic materials, advanced alloys, structural materials, soft and biomaterials, and materials for energy and environment applications. In the 2023 U.S. News and World Report Global Universities ranking for Materials Science, Drexel University ranks #29 and 9th highest in the U.S..

Bio of Dr. Yong-Jie Hu: Dr. Yong-Jie Hu is currently the Hoeganaes Endowed Assistant Professor at the department of Materials Science Engineering, Drexel University. He received his BE degree from Tsinghua University in 2010 and MS degree from Tohoku University in 2012. In 2016, he received his Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering from the Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining Drexel, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Materials Science Engineering at the University of Michigan. His work has been published in several prestigious scientific journals, including Advanced Materials, Nature Communications, Materials Today, Matter, npj Computational Materials, and Acta Materialia.
