Selected Works of Xue Mo Novels is a collection of short stories written by Xue Mo, a representative writer of Western literature, which is completely based on the western land. This book includes four novels, Xinjiangye, Yue'er, The Sound of Broad Beans at Night and Jackal. In the story, the poor and old Xinjiangye leads a peaceful life because of his clean and beautiful love without any desire; the sick Yue'er breaks down in the confused City, but is relieved because of her pure yearning in the later stage of her life; in the famine predicament, Xueyu'er, who has the chivalrous responsibility, is almost eaten by her uncle's family; Lanlan and Yinger experienced a slim chance of surviving in the desert, they fight against fate tenaciously and escape from danger. 从表面看，雪漠的小说故事情节，无论是爱情还是亲情，其中总透露出苍凉与悲惨，但深思又觉出主人公们是在倔强地过着自己的西部沙漠生活，用自己的方式实现内心的平衡与祥和。因此，这些小说读来总有一种沉重的感觉，让人久久回味。同时，作者在故事中加入了沙漠、骆驼、豺狗子、黄沙等许多西部生活元素，使得全书透出独特而浓郁的西部气息，这也是本书的最大特点之一。On the surface, the plot of Xue Mo's novel, whether love or family affection, always reveals desolation and misery. However, after deep thinking, the protagonists are living their own life in the western desert stubbornly, achieving inner balance and peace in their own way. Therefore, these novels always have a heavy feeling, which makes people aftertaste. At the same time, the author adds many Western life elements such as desert, camel, jackal, yellow sand and so on to the story, which makes the book have a unique and strong Western flavor, which is one of the characteristics of the book.

The wondrously silky oil continued to trickle into its mouth, and slide soothingly down its throat. It swallowed, its gullet making a joyous wriggle like the movement of its penis when it mated with a female camel. Its throat was so dry that it could actually hear a rasping sound, the kind a snake makes as it sloughs its skin. Its throat was so cracked from dryness, it must look like the crazing on a dried-up river bed, it thought. That was why eating the dried grass made it feel as if its throat was being flayed. A throat should be slippery from a covering of mucous membrane, not parched like a dried-up river bed. A dry throat felt terrible, worse than Huo Bi Liang, a vicious bull camel in the village that invariably cornered all the female camels when they came on heat. When it caught them, it bit their hind legs and, no matter how hard the females tried to get away, the male had the leg in its mouth and it hurt too much to struggle free. Finally the female would submit, allowing the male to mount and mate with it. The female clearly did not enjoy Huo Bi Liang thrusting inside it. It looked away and uttered plaintive cries. Some of the females, however, stuck to Huo Bi Liang like glue after he had taken them by force a couple of times. Our camel was disgusted by such behaviour. But thirst was much worse than Huo Bi Liang. Thirst was invincible, and the proof was that it could conquer even Huo Bi Liang.瓶中的液体仍在流着，滑滑的妙物越来越多，舌蕾们吞不及它们了。那清凉又滑向了喉管。喉管欢快地蠕动着，跟它进入母驼产道的阳物一样。因为干燥缺水，那蠕动时的声音像没蜕尽的蛇在游动。对，就是叫响尾蛇的那种。驼想，那喉管，想来裂了好多口子，很像干涸的河床里横七竖八的干口。这一点，是从它吞咽干草时的被剐感觉里推测出的。那地方，本该是滑滑的，有层黏膜呢。现在倒好，成干河床了。它觉得这干渴真是可恶，比村里的豁鼻梁恶驼更坏。豁鼻梁就够坏了，发情时，老是追美丽的母驼。追到后就咬它们的后腿，母驼们挣呀挣呀。它们是真挣的，但腿既然已到人家的嘴里，你的挣就等于咬你自己。......小母驼终于就给豁鼻梁扯倒在地，然后就不堪回首了。无数的小母驼就那样在豁鼻梁的身下蠕动着哀鸣。更有些可恶的母驼，叫豁鼻梁强暴一两次后，反倒老跟它黏糊在一起。每次一想这，它就感到强烈的厌恶。但那干渴，却比豁鼻梁更坏，证据是当干渴袭来时，连豁鼻梁都躲出了心。显然，它对干渴的厌恶，完全超过了对豁鼻梁的厌恶。
