Selected Works of Xue Mo Novels is a collection of short stories written by Xue Mo, a representative writer of Western literature, which is completely based on the western land. This book includes four novels, Xinjiangye, Yue'er, The Sound of Broad Beans at Night and Jackal. In the story, the poor and old Xinjiangye leads a peaceful life because of his clean and beautiful love without any desire; the sick Yue'er breaks down in the confused City, but is relieved because of her pure yearning in the later stage of her life; in the famine predicament, Xueyu'er, who has the chivalrous responsibility, is almost eaten by her uncle's family; Lanlan and Yinger experienced a slim chance of surviving in the desert, they fight against fate tenaciously and escape from danger. 从表面看，雪漠的小说故事情节，无论是爱情还是亲情，其中总透露出苍凉与悲惨，但深思又觉出主人公们是在倔强地过着自己的西部沙漠生活，用自己的方式实现内心的平衡与祥和。因此，这些小说读来总有一种沉重的感觉，让人久久回味。同时，作者在故事中加入了沙漠、骆驼、豺狗子、黄沙等许多西部生活元素，使得全书透出独特而浓郁的西部气息，这也是本书的最大特点之一。On the surface, the plot of Xue Mo's novel, whether love or family affection, always reveals desolation and misery. However, after deep thinking, the protagonists are living their own life in the western desert stubbornly, achieving inner balance and peace in their own way. Therefore, these novels always have a heavy feeling, which makes people aftertaste. At the same time, the author adds many Western life elements such as desert, camel, jackal, yellow sand and so on to the story, which makes the book have a unique and strong Western flavor, which is one of the characteristics of the book.

The oil reached its stomach, which greeted it with a joyful squirming. A camel’s stomach was a monstrous thing. It started life dark red, then turned black and hardened until it had the texture of a half-cured piece of leather. It had shrunk in the hardening, and was as wrinkled as the face of an eighty-year-old woman or the bark of a thorn bush on the sand dunes or a pig’s bladder hung under the eaves to dry in the sun for three days, or human afterbirth stewed for a whole day in soy sauce. This stomach made strange rasping sounds like three hundred mice all grinding their teeth in unison. At the same time, the stomach filled with grit. These were normally hidden in its crevices and folds but now that the gastric juices had all gone, they emerged to flex their muscles and greet the oil that slid down from the gullet. The stomach was dark – opening its windows was the dholes’ speciality – the grit could not see this cloudy liquid that came slithering in. The cells that lined the gullet along the way looted their share but the smell of the oil, the vanguard, rushed up their noses. Do not underestimate the stomach. It is not just a bag of skin, it contains a whole world. Of course that world dies when you kill the animal and make the stomach into sausages, and all that’s left is something stiff as a board. Just like the brain, in fact, full of plans and passions and tenderness when it’s alive but, as soon it is arrives, dead, in your mouth, it is just another taste sensation – a bit gamey, a bit tasty. And you will never know all the stories it could once have told. They are gone forever. Well, the stomach is no different from that. 清凉又滑向胃部。胃也惊喜地蠕动起来。胃蠕动时真像个怪物，它本该是暗红的，但现在早黑了。不但黑了，而且硬了，跟晒得半干的牛皮一样。不但硬了，而且还收缩了。那模样，跟八十多岁的老妪的脸差不多，跟沙枣树皮差不多，跟挂在屋檐下晒了三天的猪尿泡差不多，跟放在卤水和酱油里煮了五个时辰的胎衣差不多——这么多“差不多”一齐蠕动，当然是怪物了。它发出咔嚓咔嚓的声响，很像三百个老鼠在一起磨牙。胃里顿时弥漫了好多尘埃般的碎屑。它们本来潜伏在胃的皱褶处，因为胃液的不辞而别，它们趁机飘了起来，舒活舒活筋骨，活动活动精神。它们也惊喜地发现了顺食管下行的清油。因为胃里还没开窗户呢——这本是豺狗子们的本事——胃室显得有些暗，尘埃们当然看不到那半透明的东西正姗姗而来。因为沿途的细胞都在趁火打劫，妙物走得很慢，但那味道，还是当了先锋，扑进了它们的鼻子。你可别小看胃，那不是寻常的皮囊，而是一个世界。当然，当它被你弄成腊肉时，那世界就死了，只剩下一块叫你啧啧称赞的僵死。大脑不也一样吗？活着时，它有千般计较，有万种风情，好多缠绵的爱情故事就从其中演绎出来，等它一死，一入你的口，你只会觉得它是绵绵的一团腥，当然也有点香，但你是死活也品不出它曾有过的那么多故事的。胃也是那样。
