中国香港
It’s the Golden Week. Hongkongers don’t enjoy the luxury of such a long holiday. We’re
working like crazy and I’m busy preparing for upcoming events. With
the long, hot summer behind us, the cool autumn breeze is quite refreshing. It
struck me that I should reflect on my experiences while planning my future endeavours.Over
the past years, I’ve tried to share my learning experiences with enthusiastic
followers. To my surprise and disappointment, my efforts have had little impact
on the current state of English learning and teaching.Parents
and students prioritise grades and exams over genuine learning efforts.
“Experts” and teachers focus on teaching skills rather than promoting
self-tutoring and self-improvement.When
I emphasise the importance of good pronunciation and intonation, I’m often met
with resistance from those who claim it doesn’t matter. If I suggest focusing
more on input, objections arise advocating for output. When I argue that a
large vocabulary is crucial, others insist that 3,000 words are enough to
understand 90% of sentences.The
Internet is an open space where everyone is entitled to their opinion. It seems
English teaching and learning in the Mainland is trapped in its own maze.
Despite unsatisfactory outcomes, “experts,” teachers, and parents show little
motivation to change. It’s amusing that the New Curriculum, which requires
students to learn just 3,000 words in nine years, has frustrated so many
teachers. English classes have become battlegrounds of grammar rules and mock
tests. Without quizzes and exams, teachers, students, and parents might be at a
loss for what to do!Given
this disheartening situation, perhaps it’s best for me to focus on entertaining
myself and those who share the same values. Thus I might find more peace and happiness.
