上周三在郑州某院的演讲口译结束后，迄今每每回想起当时的危机场景，心中都有些后怕。然而，无论心中多么恐惧，我也没有后退的选择。
当然，骑虎不下也要建立在实力之上，否则真的要出丑了。没有长年累月的功力，要应对突发的状况或接下陌生的任务，说不定会一败涂地。

On the afternoon of the 6th November, we arrived punctually at the auditorium of Zhengzhou Tourism College (ZZTC), which enrolls 18,600 students. The hall was magnificent, with 2,000 students in attendance, all dressed in black suits. As soon as we stepped into the hall, we were immediately immersed in thunderous applause and cheers. After taking our seats, the college’s senior management came over to shake hands and exchange greetings. At that moment, the MC, looking flustered, informed me that the clicker for the presentation on the computer was not working! What should we do? Dean does not stay at the fixed podium while giving a speech. Instead, he likes to move freely on the stage. Without the clicker, he cannot control the computer. I suggested placing the laptop on the lectern, thus making it possible for Dean to press the keyboard or mouse. Even though it would be inconvenient and awkward, he could control the pace of the presentation. Unexpectedly, we were told that the cables connecting the computer to the stage were damaged and could not work. The only solution was for me to go to the control room backstage to flip the ppt slides and interpret with a handheld microphone simultaneously. The dean of the tourism school at ZZTC proposed that they could designate a teacher to flip the slides, allowing me to focus on interpreting. But how would others know when to flip the slides? In such a disastrous situation, I had to take the crisis into my own hands. ![]()
Interpreting further away from the stage than this distance
With a nervous heart, I walked from the front stage to the backstage. In the dimly lit studio, I held the heavy microphone in my left hand and clicked the mouse with my right hand, guessing the timing to flip the slides based on Dean’s pace. To make matters worse, in the control room, I had to sit down to work. Looking up through a small window, I could only catch a glimpse of the left corner of the stage, while Dean was moving on the right side of the stage. This meant I couldn’t see his lip movements and had to interpret the speech blindly by listening. The sound engineer in the control room kept whispering with a teacher, and Dean’s voice from outside was faint. I could hardly hear clearly, let alone concentrate. Fortunately, there was a pair of headphones next to the computer, which I immediately put on. Throughout the speech, it was like listening to the radio while continuously interpreting. Without being able to take any notes, I completed the entire English-Chinese and Chinese-English interpretation with a calm and mellow voice. After the speech, the MC couldn’t contain her excitement and invited me from the backstage to the front stage. As soon as I stepped out of the control room, the students’ applause and cheers surged like a tidal wave! It was the most enthusiastic applause I have ever received in my life!![]()
