A mother spoke with me about her son, a highly talented guitarist who is now in high school. Though excelling in English, he struggles with other subjects. While it is often believed that music can enhance intelligence, I have my doubts. In my view, mastering any skill requires a significant amount of practice. If a student dedicates a lot of time to an instrument, it leaves little room for other subjects or skills. When my son was 5 years old, he was very enthusiastic about playing the violin. However, I soon realised that his interest might not last long, and the time investment was unlikely to yield valuable returns. So, I didn’t force him to continue. Instead, I encouraged him to learn Japanese. Learning a language is much easier than mastering a musical instrument and is a more suitable and practical skill for children. Now he is fluent in Japanese! Therefore, I strongly suggest that parents help their children prioritise their studies. Focus on school subjects first. If children have extra energy, they can then pursue their hobbies. Otherwise, academic studies should take precedence.
