The Drop-in Tutoring Program
“Finally, there’s a place where I can ask questions without holding back!” a student described the Drop-in Tutoring Program. Established in 2010, the program was designed to address student queries from multiple perspectives. The tutoring sessions are held in 6A013 and 6A014 of the No.6 Teaching Building every evening from 7:20 PM to 9:45 PM, with 6-8 volunteers available to assist students.
Drop-in tutoring brings together enthusiastic and academically strong students, with over 160 undergraduate and graduate volunteers each semester. The program covers a range of fundamental and specialized subjects, including Calculus, Linear Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Electronic Circuits and Systems, among others.
“I once taught a sixth-year Tsinghua student who needed to pass the Organic Chemistry exam to graduate, and in the end, she succeeded,” shared Ouyang Chuke from the School of Mechanical Engineering, reflecting on his experience as a tutor.
Chinese Writing Tutors Program
Drop-in tutoring also includes the Chinese Writing Tutors Program, providing one-on-one support to students struggling with writing. Tutors focus primarily on enhancing the structure, style and wording of various texts, including articles, journal papers, application documents, resumes, and more.
Gui Yuxin from the Department of Energy and Power Engineering mentioned, “Sometimes, students attending these writing tutoring sessions choose topics they are not interested in, which makes it hard for them to express their ideas. Why not choose a topic they are interested in instead?” The tutors always provide suggestions to students on selecting themes and methods for writing.
Online Tutoring
Currently, the drop-in tutoring program offers online tutoring services through a WeChat group. Volunteers are scheduled according to their subjects and availability. Students can ask questions at any time throughout the day by posting their requests in the group. The responding volunteers will then promptly reply, add the student as a contact, and establish a one-on-one tutoring connection.
Volunteers in Tutoring
Volunteering in this tutoring program offers numerous benefits, including a deep sense of accomplishment. “I have recently answered a lot of questions on linear algebra. One time, a student who was promoting the cultural festival in the dorm recognized me and thanked me for my help,” shared Lin Yutang from the Department of Electronic Engineering.
Hu Xiuyuan, a doctoral candidate from the Department of Electronic Engineering, emphasized the value of human interaction: “Communicating and discussing with real people can help tutees more effectively address specific challenges, whereas AI may struggle to understand their situation if they cannot explain the issues well.” He encourages students to join the tutoring sessions to enhance their mastery of learning strategies.
The Drop-in Tutoring Program warmly welcomes every Tsinghua student to visit for more information about study resources. Feel free to walk into the classroom whenever you need help!
