Li Luming leads delegation to New Zealand for educational ties

Meeting between Tsinghua University and the University of Auckland

Li Luming visited the University of Auckland and met with Vice-Chancellor Dawn Freshwater.

Li Luming introduced the latest developments at Tsinghua University in areas such as talent cultivation and scientific research innovation. He stated that education, science and technology, and talent are the fundamental and strategic pillars supporting China's path to modernization. Tsinghua University places great emphasis on cultivating innovative talents and is actively exploring frontier technological fields such as artificial intelligence, promoting the integration of AI into education and teaching, continuously implementing a global strategy, and enhancing its internationalization level. Li expressed the hope that the signing of the cooperation agreement would serve as an opportunity for both parties to further deepen their collaboration, jointly contributing the wisdom and strength of higher education institutions to the promotion of building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Freshwater welcomed President Li Luming and his delegation. She noted that the University of Auckland and Tsinghua University have maintained a long-standing friendship and have carried out productive collaborations. As the global and educational landscapes undergo significant changes, universities have an important mission. She anticipates further cooperation between the two universities in areas such as talent cultivation and scientific research.

Li Luming and Dawn Freshwater signed a Memorandum of Understanding and a student exchange agreement. Professor Gary Brierley from the University of Auckland presented the achievements of the Tsinghua-Qinghai-Auckland “Three Brothers” Project, involving Tsinghua University, Qinghai University, and the University of Auckland. Li Luming, Dawn Freshwater, and Qinghai University President Shi Yuanchun held in-depth discussions on trilateral cooperation and signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a new round of collaborations. Erik Lithander, deputy vice-chancellor strategic engagement, Frank Bloomfield, deputy vice-chancellor research and innovation, as well as relevant professors and department heads from the University of Auckland, attended the meeting.

Visit to the Maurice Wilkins Centre

During his visit to the University of Auckland, Li Luming also visited the Maurice Wilkins Centre, where he held in-depth discussions with Professor Rod Dunbar, scientific director of the Center, and toured the laboratory facilities. In commemoration of the friendship and cooperation between the two universities, the University of Auckland planted a tree in the name of Tsinghua University at New Zealand’s Ed Hillary Hope Reserve.

Visit to the Chinese Consulate General in Auckland

Li Luming and his delegation visited the Chinese Consulate-General in Auckland, where he held discussions with Acting Consul General Lei Zhen. Li Luming delivered a keynote report titled “Building a Leading Country in Education and International Cooperation”. He discussed Tsinghua’s practice of deeply learning and implementing the spirit of the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, as well as the achievements in promoting the University's high-quality development through comprehensively deepening reforms.

Li Luming also met with Tsinghua alumni representatives in New Zealand. On behalf of Tsinghua University, he expressed gratitude to the alumni for their care and support for their alma mater. Following an introduction to the University's recent reforms and development, he encouraged participants to contribute ideas and suggestions for advancing a new phase of high-quality development at Tsinghua University as a world-class university with Chinese characteristics. He emphasized the importance of making a positive contribution to advancing China's path to modernization and enhancing the common well-being of humanity. The alumni shared their personal development experiences and life insights, expressing their enduring affection for Tsinghua.
