Qiu Yong, secretary of the CPC Tsinghua University Committee and chairperson of the University Council, led a delegation to Italy to attend the 2024 Tsinghua International Conference on Art & Design Education (ICADE 2024), and visited the China-Italy Design Innovation Hub of Tsinghua University on November 16.
Hosted by Tsinghua University and organized by the Academy of Arts & Design, the Tsinghua Arts and Design Institute in Milan, and the China-Italy Design Innovation Hub, the ICADE 2024 opened in Milan on Nov 16. Welcome addresses and remarks were given by Qiu Yong; Liu Kan, Chinese Consul General in Milan; Christoph Lindner, president and vice-chancellor of the Royal College of Art; and Giuliano Noci, vice-rector of Politecnico di Milano.
Qiu Yong delivers welcome remarks
Qiu emphasized the role of cultural and educational exchanges in strengthening the friendship between China and Italy. He underscored Tsinghua’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge disciplines, using aesthetics as a medium to promote the integration of art, science, and technology. As an important platform for promoting cross-cultural and interdisciplinary dialogue and exchange in art and design, this conference in Milan plays a pivotal role in deepening cooperation between Western and Chinese art and design education while advancing the global development of these fields. He anticipates collaborative explorations on how the convergence of art and technology can spark creativity, contributing to innovations in both technology and culture.
Liu Kan delivers welcome remarks
Liu Kan highlighted the growing ties between China and Italy across diverse sectors, including trade, science and technology, culture, and education. He cited the partnership between Tsinghua and Politecnico di Milano as a model of successful educational collaborations between the two nations. He expressed hopes that this conference would inspire further integration of diverse cultural perspectives, propelling people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Italy to new heights.
Christoph Lindner delivers welcome remarks
Christoph Lindner thanked Tsinghua University for creating a platform to enhance interaction and understanding among universities. He encouraged participants to unleash limitless imagination and innovation through the collaboration of ideas and work together to shape the future transformation in global art and design education.
Giuliano Noci delivers video address
Giuliano Noci stated that Tsinghua University is an important strategic partner for Politecnico di Milano. He expressed his desire to further strengthen the collaborative foundation and discover additional avenues for cooperation, working together to lead the innovative evolution and reform of higher education in response to emerging challenges.
With the theme of “New Dimensions: Imagination Beyond the Horizon,” the two-day conference offered a comprehensive and vivid display of the latest achievements in Chinese art and design education. Bringing together over 150 experts and scholars from more than 50 art and design institutions across 14 countries, the event aims to explore innovative development of art and design education in the era of artificial intelligence. The “New Dimensions: International Students’ Work Exhibition,” curated by the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, will be showcased at the China-Italy Design Innovation Hub from November 15 to 18.

Prior to the conference, Qiu and the Tsinghua delegation visited the China-Italy Design Innovation Hub, a key component of Tsinghua’s global strategy and its first educational and research base in Europe. The Hub aims to foster a thriving ecosystem for design innovation and to cultivate top-notch innovative talents with global competencies. Qiu emphasized the importance of long-term planning and strengthening initiatives that push forward the innovative development of cultural creativity and design services, calling for more profound integration with related industries, and serving as a vital link and standout representation of the China-Italy cultural collaboration.
The event was attended by leaders from the Academy of Arts & Design, the Office of International Affairs, and Tsinghua University Education Foundation among other related departments.
