Respiratory Research is calling for submissions to our Collection on Pleural Disease: advances in pathology, diagnosis and therapeutic approach.

Due to the ever growing evidence base into the mechanisms, pathogenesis and management of the myriad conditions affecting the pleural space, as well as the growth of highly specialist physician-led interventions, pleural disease is now considered a distinct and important subspecialty of respiratory medicine. This collection will welcome original articles or reviews on the clinical and pre-clinical diagnosis and management of pleural diseases and we look forward to your important contributions.

Syntheticand systems biology approaches applied to microbial engineering

Microorganisms represent ideal candidates for synthetic and systems biology research because they can be manipulated with relative ease and they play essential roles in the environment, energy production and human health. The application and integration of both approaches had a strong impact on the field of microbial engineering, offering innovative strategies to study biological functions, as well as to design and optimize microbial cell factories. By combining the design of synthetic biological systems with the application of engineering principles, such as mathematical modelling and whole-system analysis, both systems and synthetic biology have been crucial to develop microbial platforms for the sustainable production of pharmaceuticals, biofuels or biomaterials, and other environmental applications (e.g. bioremediation processes). Important advances have been made for instance in the implementation of synthetic gene circuits for precise control of cellular processes and communication, the development of high-throughput screening technologies, or the integration of omics and computational modelling tools to engineer and model complex microbial traits. Moreover, being able to construct and program ‘synthetic microbial consortia’ can expand the range of biological functions performed by a microbial community, as well as their biotechnological applications.

Mental health in the transgender community

BMC Psychiatry welcomes submissions to our Collection on Mental health in the transgender community. Transgender individuals face unique challenges related to mental health, including higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation compared to the general population. The experience of gender dysphoria, social stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to gender-affirming care further exacerbate these disparities. Research in this area has shed light on the importance of social support, gender-affirming care, and the impact of social rejection on mental wellbeing among transgender individuals.

Animal models in infectious diseases

BMC Infectious Diseases is calling for submissions to our Collection on Animal models in infectious diseases. Understanding and treating infectious diseases hinges upon the crucial role of animal models, serving as instrumental tools in unraveling host-pathogen interactions, predicting human responses, and exploring therapeutic interventions. Animal models in infectious diseases serve as invaluable tools, allowing scientists to bridge the gap between the laboratory and the complex realities of human infections. These models, often rodents or non-human primates, play a crucial role in elucidating the mechanisms of pathogenesis, evaluating novel therapeutic strategies, and guiding public health interventions. However, the utility of animal models comes with inherent complexities and limitations. Genetic diversity, immunological variations, and ecological factors may influence the accuracy of these models to human conditions. Ongoing investigations explore techniques and advancements in tissue humanization, aiming to replicate human physiological conditions and further enhance the relevance of animal models in infectious diseases research.

Advances in mycotherapy

BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies is calling for submissions to our collection on Advances in mycotherapy. This collection welcomes studies that investigate the bioactive compounds, pharmacological properties and potential therapeutic applications of medicinal mushrooms. We also welcome studies that evaluate the efficacy and safety of mycotherapy along with regulatory challenges of the commercialization of mycotherapeutic products. Observational studies that look at prevalence, patterns of use, and ethnomycological insights into the use of mushrooms as medicine are also of interest.

Sex/Gender Differences in Cancer

Biology of Sex Differences invites authors to submit articles addressing the mechanisms underlying sex/gender differences in cancer incidence, treatment response, and survival. Topics may include, but are not limited to, mechanisms of cancer initiation and progression, epigenetics, tumor microenvironment, cancer immunology, angiogenesis, cancer metabolism, treatment response, health care access. Gender investigations should address gender as a contributing factor, not as a proxy for sex.

Big data in digital healthcare

BMC Digital Health is calling for submissions to our Collection, Big data in digital healthcare. Digital healthcare encompasses a wide spectrum of technologies, from wearable devices and mobile applications to telemedicine platforms. As these technologies become more prevalent, they generate vast amounts of data, often referred to as "big data." This Collection seeks to explore the multifaceted role of big data in digital healthcare, with a focus on its potential to drive innovation, inform clinical decision-making, and address pressing healthcare challenges.

Insights from trans-ancestral association study

Genome-wide association, along with other -omic studies, have traditionally been conducted in single populations, but multi-ancestry studies applied to data from several populations have become increasingly popular as more such data is generated. Trans-ancestral studies can offer an increase in the power and resolution of studies and thereby generate novel findings and gain biological insights. The identification and analysis of common and rare genetic variants across different ancestries also offers insights into the universality or specificity of these genetic determinants, particularly for populations often underrepresented in studies of genetic associations, metabolomes, proteomes and transcriptomes.

This collection aims to spotlight insights garnered from research across diverse ancestries, encompassing trans-ethnic, multi-ancestry, and cross-population investigations. It will also cover novel methods for analysis of such data.
