A tragic jet ski collision off Thailand's Phuket island on January 14 claimed the life of one Chinese tourist and left another injured, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. The incident is under investigation, as confirmed by China's embassy in Thailand.
This marks the second incident involving Chinese tourists near Phuket within two days, raising concerns about safety measures for travelers in the region.
Just a day earlier, on January 13, a catamaran carrying 33 Chinese tourists and five crew members capsized near Koh Racha island, north of Phuket. Fortunately, all passengers and crew were rescued without any casualties, CCTV reported.
Thailand remains a top destination for Chinese tourists, particularly during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday season. The Southeast Asian country has long been a favorite for its warm climate, vibrant culture, and scenic islands. In 2024, Chinese tourists accounted for the largest group of international visitors to Thailand, with a total of 6.7 million arrivals.
As Thailand braces for an influx of Chinese tourists during the festive season, the recent incidents highlight the importance of ensuring safety regulations are upheld for recreational and transport activities.
