A self-proclaimed French citizen, using the pseudonym "abcd," stirred lively discussions on Xiaohongshu, a popular Chinese social media platform, after addressing French stereotypes and joking about fare dodging on public transport. The blogger's post and subsequent exchanges with Chinese netizens have drawn both amusement and criticism.
In an initial post, abcd introduced themselves humorously, saying, “Hello everyone, I’m French. Please don’t call me a surrenderer; France has only surrendered once. Any Chinese friends who love wine and cheese?” The playful reference to France's historical reputation set the tone for the ensuing comments.
Among the responses, one Chinese netizen shared their experience during a visit to France: “I went to the Olympics in France and rode the subway. The first time I dodged a fare was because a French uncle helped open the gate for me.”
abcd replied with a mix of understanding and humor: “You did the right thing; tickets are expensive. Dodging once doesn’t affect the subway company financially, but you could use the €4 to buy cheese and be much happier.”
The conversation took a sharper turn when another user recounted their failed attempt to dodge the fare: “I copied you and got fined €50.” abcd's cheeky reply quickly went viral: “RUN FASTER THE NEXT TIME, BRO.”
