A Zhejiang University alumna has been expelled from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for academic misconduct involving artificial intelligence, sparking widespread debate in academic and social circles.

The student, identified as Ms. Yan, previously received Zhejiang University's prestigious "Chu Kochen Scholarship," awarded to only 12 undergraduates annually, reflecting exceptional academic excellence. Her stellar achievements secured her admission to MIT, one of the world’s top institutions.

However, Ms. Yan’s promising academic journey took a shocking turn when it was revealed that she had used AI tools, specifically ChatGPT, to manipulate data in a course assignment. The misconduct was exposed by Professor Rosalind Picard, a prominent researcher at MIT’s Media Lab, during the NeurIPS 2024 conference. This discovery led to her expulsion, effectively ending her academic career at MIT.

The incident has drawn significant criticism online, with many expressing disbelief and disappointment. Some netizens labeled her as a "disgrace to Zhejiang University" and even suggested that her actions tarnished the reputation of Chinese academia. Reports also circulated claiming Ms. Yan admitted to using similar methods during her undergraduate studies, though she later denied these allegations in a public apology.

In her statement, Ms. Yan acknowledged her misuse of ChatGPT in a 2023 course assignment, stating, “By the time I realized the severity of my actions, it was too late.” She refuted claims that she had engaged in similar practices at Zhejiang University and urged the public not to direct criticism at her alma mater or MIT.

Despite her apology, many remain unconvinced. Critics have highlighted how her actions could jeopardize future opportunities for Chinese students at prestigious institutions. “Her misconduct may make it harder for Zhejiang University graduates to gain acceptance into MIT,” one commenter noted.
