Chinese pop star and actor Lu Han has been barred from gaining new followers on major social media platforms following a controversial live-stream in which he swore, drank heavily, and gave a middle finger to a viewer.
On January 6, users noticed they were unable to follow Lu, as his account had reportedly “violated laws and regulations or community norms.” The 34-year-old, with a massive online following of 75 million across three platforms, apologized through his studio’s account, taking responsibility for his behavior and pledging to “discipline himself and eliminate bad influences.”
The incident stemmed from a live-stream Lu hosted on November 29, where his uncharacteristic appearance - red-dyed hair, multiple piercings, and a fiery demeanor - shocked viewers. During the stream, he lashed out at critics, used profanity, and displayed the middle finger to a provocative comment.
Lu, born in Beijing, rose to fame as a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band EXO. After leaving the group in 2014, he returned to China, achieving stardom through acting roles in films such as 20 Once Again and The Witness, as well as appearances on reality shows like Running Man China.
The controversy has divided netizens. While some criticized his behavior, calling it a poor example for young fans, others defended him, praising his candidness and “manly” demeanor. His transition from a fresh-faced idol to a more rugged image sparked heated discussions.
Lu’s romantic relationship with actress Guan Xiaotong, revealed in 2017, also remains a point of contention. His public love confession was considered taboo in the K-pop world and caused so much online traffic that a major platform temporarily crashed. Despite criticism, the couple reportedly remains together.
Unlike other celebrities who faced harsh penalties, such as the removal of profiles and works, Lu remains active online and continues his promotional efforts. However, the delayed punishment for his November behavior has raised questions among fans and observers.
“Pop idols like Lu Han should act responsibly, knowing that many of their fans are young and impressionable,” commented one user. Another added, “Celebrities should avoid gaining attention through provocative actions.”
