Shanghai is in early talks to host American pop superstar Taylor Swift for a potential concert in 2025, signaling Chinese cities’ growing efforts to attract international performers to stimulate the economy.
Zhang Qi, deputy director of Shanghai’s culture and tourism bureau, confirmed the discussions with Swift’s team, according to The Paper. “Whether it will materialize depends on the market and the city's appeal. However, we remain optimistic,” Zhang stated.
Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour, which recently concluded its only Asian stops in Japan and Singapore, has captured global attention, emphasizing the economic potential of major international events. Last year, advisors to the Shanghai government referred to global superstars like Swift as “walking GDP,” highlighting their ability to drive significant economic growth through concerts and related tourism.
To make Shanghai a competitive destination for international talent, government officials have called for easing regulations that often hinder such events. The Shanghai municipal government previously urged departments to simplify processes like approvals, visas, and customs to attract more high-profile performers.
Swift's potential performance would mark a major milestone for Shanghai’s cultural scene while boosting its global reputation as a top destination for world-class events.
Netizens in China have expressed excitement, with one user commenting, “Taylor Swift’s concert could be an incredible opportunity to bring in tourism and boost local businesses.” Another noted the challenges, saying, “Let’s hope the regulations won’t discourage more stars from coming to China.”
