Mauro Morandi, an Italian man famously known as the “Italian Robinson Crusoe,” has passed away at the age of 85, three years after leaving the uninhabited island he called home for over three decades.
In 1989, Morandi set out for Polynesia to escape the pressures of consumerism and modern society. During his journey, he stumbled upon Budelli, a small island near Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea. By chance, the island’s caretaker was preparing for retirement, and Morandi took over the role, starting a remarkable 32-year life of solitude.
During his time on Budelli, Morandi dedicated himself to maintaining the island’s pristine environment. He cleaned its beaches and educated visiting tourists about the importance of environmental conservation. Living in an old World War II-era shelter built from coral, granite, and shells, he relied on simple means for survival. He used a temporary solar energy system for power, a fireplace for warmth, and had food and supplies delivered periodically.
In 2021, Morandi was forced to leave Budelli when Italian authorities designated it as a nature park. With no alternative, he relocated to a small apartment in La Maddalena, Sardinia, where he began a new chapter of his life. Despite his initial heartbreak over leaving the island, Morandi embraced his transition to civilization.
In an interview with CNN following his move, Morandi reflected on his journey: “It never ended. I am a living example that a new life is possible. You can always start everything again, even if you are over 80. There are always more things to experience.”
Morandi’s story captivated people worldwide as a testament to resilience, simplicity, and a deep connection to nature. His life on Budelli embodied the ideals of living harmoniously with the environment, a message he tirelessly promoted.
