Abstract

Mongolian modern art began to develop relatively recently, since the 1990s when the local art school got out of the ideological control exercised by the Soviet Union and left its aesthetic norms as a consequence. Until then, the socialist realism constituted the dominant trend in Mongolian art. It was in general based on Soviet art doctrines but at the same time it was marked with an easily recognizable national identity. In addition, the influence of traditional Buddhist art and its religious ideas, which were never forgotten in Mongolia, also played a very important role. The uniqueness of Mongolian modern art lies in its exceptionally complex and, behind a shadow of a doubt, extremely interesting nature. It borrowed the main tendencies of modernism from Western European art, giving local versions of its styles (Expressionism, Fauvism, Abstraction), but at the same time it saved its own spiritual foundations, on which elements of modernist styles were later superimposed.
