Wang Yi aims to create a form of painting art that is unique to the information age, heralding a revolution in visual art that will transform the relationship between reality and the virtual in painting. He believes that the value of art lies in its ability to document the times. Although one might not always clearly grasp the pulse of the era while immersed in its currents, it is important to believe that new technologies, inventions, and energies are tools for dismantling the old order.
His work often draws from classic paintings in art history, video games, and old films. He treats painting as both a medium for storing information and an output channel, where the non-textual readable space within the painting becomes the forefront of information. The artist’s inspiration and creative motives become the terminal for processing and transmitting this information, turning painting into a medium that simulates computer data. By using his sensory experiences and philosophical ideas as a foundation, he quantifies and processes visual information and elements from both the real and virtual worlds in a manner akin to information entropy. This approach constructs an information model mediated through painting, exploring the identity and significance of art in the information age.
