Hello ,boys and girls! Today, I will share with you a legend about Little New Year.
Little New Year is a Chinese traditional festival. It falls about a week before the lunar New Year. It is also known as the festival of the Kitchen God, who oversees the conduct of each household. Legend has it that once upon a time, there was an emperor with a greedy mouth. Wherever he went, he would try what he hadn’t eaten. One day, when he was wandering around a village, he met a beautiful girl with a basket of jujube cakes. The emperor had eaten a lot of delicious cuisine, but he never ate such yummy cakes, so he asked the girl for the cakes. After wolfing down the cakes in seconds, he came up with a wicked idea: to take the girl to his palace to let her make jujube cakes everyday. So he asked the girl to bake 49 cakes right away. However, when the girl heard it, she unhurriedly plucked the golden hairpin off her head and stroked at the basket and unexpectedly, out came the cakes. Knowing that his attempt failed, the emperor decided to seize her to his palace. Angrily, the girl stretched out her hand and with one sweep, the emperor was put on the wall. She then flew up to the sky. And the emperor became the kitchen god from then on. Accidentally, it happened to be on 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month. So it is also called Kitchen God Festival. On this day, the kitchen god will report to the Jade Emperor in heaven annually, detailing the families’ deeds over the past year the past year. To sweeten his words, families prepare offerings, including foods, fruits, and candies. And this is the origin of the Kitchen God Festival.
This tradition is passed down from generations. Apart form providing offerings to kitchen God to make good wishes, people also sweep their houses to clean away bad luck and make way for good luck.
