礼拜六下午赶过去日漫集市,因为没有去过那个展厅,查了一向舍近求远的Google(其实后来发现坐地铁妥妥的更方便也更快)决定坐公交。
Amidst moments of brutality and abject horror, we are undoubtedly subjected to the worst that mankind has to offer.
The harrowing and senseless acts of violence perpetrated against innocent members of the community in the Bondi shopping centre today are no different.
Any event that results in a fatality is an incredibly difficult one to find a positive spin for, let alone a mass murder where multiple innocent lives are ended at the hands of a cruel and calculated individual with an appetite for carnage.
What we do tend to glaze over amidst the horror and cruelty, however, is just how many incredible acts of kindness and bravery rise to the surface in times of human suffering—and how inherently good the wider community actually is.
News cycles have a responsibility to report on these awful events, but their primary focus will mean the bulk of the angles they take will be towards the sensationalist, aka what moves the needle.
They focus on the loss.
On the grief.
On the pain and suffering inflicted upon an unsuspecting community.
And unfortunately, in particular, on the perpetrator themselves.
Make no mistake, what happened today is horrifying, gut-wrenching, and unforgivable.
But as the dust settles in these coming days, don’t let the key takeaway from this awful event be that the acts of a diabolical individual represent the intentions of the wider community as a whole.
The ones who more accurately represent us are those individuals who actively stood in the way of the attacker to obstruct his path and allow others to escape.
Or those who tended to the wounded mid-attack with little consideration for the imminent danger they faced.
Or the shop owners who summoned unsuspecting shoppers into their stores and put themselves in jeopardy to ensure the safety of people they don’t even know.
Or amongst the best of us, the police officer who singlehandedly hunted down and neutralised the offender who was hell bent on killing or maiming as many people as he could, potentially preventing even more tragedy.
These are the examples of humanity which best exemplify what the wider community of Australia stands for.
Because this is the true fabric of our country
