木雕中的原材料从收藏上来讲，高端材质要比一般材质更有价值，更有收藏意义，比如说海黄、紫檀、老山檀、黄杨木等这类材质价值更高端一些，但是这类材质也有限制，因本身的生长特性限制，原材比较偏小，导致很少有大料。所以，这些材质的木雕作品，一般都是小件居多，像手把件，或者小件摆件比较多，几乎没有中等或者大件摆件。
当然，不论高端的材质或者是一般的材质都需要好的雕工，否则就是暴殄天物，人物摆件重在开脸，脸开的不好就严重掉价，若是脸开的好，就具有画龙点睛的效果，所以说有的脸开的好的话，我们就说是“神开脸”，足以说明开脸的重要性。
