The Department of Geography at the University of Alabama is recruiting 1-2 highly motivated and talented PhD students to work in GIS and health geography with Dr. Changzhen Wang (https://geography.ua.edu/people/changzhen-wang/). The position will provide PhD students with four-year assistantships covering a full tuition waiver, stipend, and health insurance allowance. Additional funding support for professional development is also available at https://geography.ua.edu/graduate/. The expected starting date is August 2025.

Qualified candidates should have at least a master’s degree in GIS, Geography, or other relevant disciplines (e.g., public health, computer science, network science, statistics, urban planning, transportation) and demonstrate excellent English written and oral communication skills. The ideal candidates are expected to be passionate about conducting interdisciplinary research in GIS, spatial network analysis and modeling, big data analytics, service area delineation and their linkage with health care access and outcomes (e.g., mortality), health and cancer service research, cartography and geovisualization, human mobility, health and environment, and machine learning. Strong skills in programming (Python or R), spatial data analysis, modeling, and visualization (e.g., WebGIS), and experience in big data analytics, spatial network analysis, spatial statistics, and machine learning are preferred.
