The Department of Geography and GIScience at the UIUC is at the forefront of remote sensing and GIScience research and education. The department is part of the School of Earth, Society & Environment (SESE) which includes three departments (Geography & GIScience; Earth Science & Environmental Change; and Climate, Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences). SESE hosts its own high-performance computing cluster and supports a multidisciplinary program in geospatial and environmental studies. The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the UIUC provides cutting-edge computing, data storage, and visualization resources. The Remote Sensing Space-Time Innovation (RSSI) Lab in the Department of Geography and GIScience (GGIS) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is seeking highly motivated M.S. and Ph.D. students interested in environmental and quantitative remote sensing beginning Fall 2025.

Our research mainly lies at the confluence of remote sensing, GIScience, and biogeography, focusing on computational remote sensing of terrestrial ecosystem dynamics at local to global spatial scales, and daily to decadal temporal scales. We are particularly interested in advancing computational remote sensing paradigms in characterizing land surface patterns and processes, underlying mechanisms, and subsequent feedbacks to the atmosphere. We combine remote sensing, process-based models, field observations, artificial intelligence, high-performance and cloud computing, to study agricultural and forest ecosystem structures, functions, and responses to climate change and human activities. Our work spans varying types of ecosystems, including natural (e.g., forests and riparian), human-dominated (e.g., agriculture landscapes), and disturbed (e.g., by species invasion or habitat degradation) ecosystems. Research in our lab is inherently interdisciplinary. 1. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in remote sensing, geography, statistics, computer science, environmental science, agriculture, or a closely related field; 2.
