The winter sun shines warmly, with light clouds gently drifting by. In the first week of December, Shenzhen College of International Education (SCIE) held its flag-raising ceremony. We were also honored to welcome Mr. Joe, Director of Quality, Performance, and Risk, Business Performance, International Education from Cambridge University Press & Assessment to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students in the June 2024 Cambridge International Examinations.
During the ceremony, Mr. Joe congratulated and presented certificates to the award-winning students on behalf of Cambridge International Education. He also quoted the University of Cambridge's motto, "Hinc lucem et pocula sacra", inspiring our students to pursue the true essence of enlightenment and wisdom.
(The following is Mr. Joe's speech at SCIE)
Good morning, everyone! First, let me thank Mr Neil Mobsby for inviting me to today’s event. I’m delighted to extend my warmest greetings to all the students at Shenzhen College of International Education.
I am Joe, Director of Quality, Performance, and Risk, Business Performance, International Education from Cambridge University Press & Assessment. It is a pleasure and an honour to be here at SCIE today, and to join you in celebrating your exceptional achievements.
Shenzhen College of International Education has been a Cambridge school since 2004, making this year a milestone – 20 years of our partnership. Although this is my first visit to SCIE, your reputation has reached far and wide, even back in Cambridge. I’ve heard colleagues speak highly of this remarkable school, and your consistent excellence in Cambridge examinations is a testament to that.
Since the inception of the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards, you have consistently secured the most awards across a diverse range of subjects. This year alone, students from SCIE have achieved 51 awards, spanning Cambridge’s six key subject areas: mathematics, sciences, humanities and social sciences, languages, English language and literature, and creative and professional.
To all the Outstanding Cambridge learners, congratulations! Your achievements reflect your brilliance, ambition and resilience. You have made your families, teachers, friends and all who have supported you so proud! Today is your moment – a well-deserved celebration of all the hard work you’ve put in to reach this milestone.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the unwavering support of your parents and teachers. Their dedication and encouragement have played an integral role in your success, and they deserve our heartfelt gratitude.
Thank you for choosing Cambridge to be part of this chapter in your lives and the foundation of many more chapters to come.
We have been part of the University of Cambridge for over 160 years. Every year, around a million students prepare for their future with a Cambridge education. Our qualifications are recognised by the world’s top universities, and the skills you have gained, along with your achievements, will undoubtedly unlock countless opportunities when you move on to university and the next chapter of your lives.
As you receive your awards today, remember that this is just the beginning. This is why at Cambridge, we work hard to make sure that the programmes you study not only provide deep academic knowledge, but also foster critical thinking and independent research skills that will serve you throughout life.
With this strong foundation, I encourage you to fully engage with every aspect of your future. Immerse yourselves in learning, build meaningful relationships, take control of your own paths, and be ready to shape the world.
Before I close, allow me to mention the University of Cambridge motto, which reads in Latin: Hinc lucem et pocula sacra, which means: from this place, we gain enlightenment and precious knowledge.
I hope that today’s event – and your Cambridge qualifications – will help you gain enlightenment and precious knowledge.
I am so proud of you, and I have so much faith in what you will be.
