In November, an extraordinary exhibition opened outside the Halo Theatre, showcasing the remarkable creativity and intellectual curiosity of G1 students. As part of their assessment project, students explored the theme of The Art of the Free Market, focusing on the price mechanism and resource allocation.
This interdisciplinary assessed project brought together concepts from physics, chemistry, music, and other subjects, creating a truly innovative display of learning and artistry.
Students used their creativity to construct 3D models that illustrated supply, demand, and price changes. This hands-on approach brought economic concepts to life in an engaging and accessible way. Not only was this project fun for students to create, but it was also highly enjoyable and thought-provoking for the audience.
Visitors were invited to evaluate nine unique artworks, each offering a distinctive interpretation of economic principles. Guests voted for their favorite designs by leaving stickers and comments, fostering a lively and interactive experience.
A platform for open dialogue, the Debate Board allowed participants to share their views on controversial economic topics. This initiative sparked discussions, engaging students and visitors alike in meaningful conversations on the topic “Should the government intervene or should they just let the free market do the job”.
A dedicated section highlighted groups that made exceptional contributions to the exhibition, celebrating their creativity and hard work.
The ingenuity of the students' work was evident in the diverse ways they represented key economic ideas. At its core, resource allocation involves making choices with limited resources, guided by the price mechanism. Through their art, students transformed this abstract concept into something tangible and visually engaging.
For instance, some students used musical instruments to represent supply and demand, while others created a striking piece featuring a giant hand symbolizing the market. These imaginative interpretations not only educated visitors but also inspired them to reflect on the dynamic nature of the global economy and their own roles within it.
The journey from planning and creating the artworks to presenting them at the exhibition was a deeply enriching experience for the students. The exhibition was put together by G1 students, led by economics teachers Ms. Shiwei and Mr. Angelos. This hands-on project allowed IGCSE Economics students to actively interpret and apply their understanding of the free market price mechanism while learning valuable skills such as teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.
Moreover, the interdisciplinary approach encouraged students to integrate ideas from other subjects, such as using principles of physics and chemistry in their model designs or incorporating musical elements to illustrate economic theories.
More than just an art display, this exhibition bridged the gap between economics and creativity, offering guests a fresh perspective on how economic systems function. It invited everyone to feel the pulse of the global economy, leaving them inspired, intrigued, and eager to learn more.
