第23章 不速之客

内容:鲍勃的前家具店老板彼特前来拜访。他让鲍勃回公司,但是鲍勃不感兴趣。

1、stop by:pay a quick visit 顺便拜访;顺路探望

① And she asked me to stop by and say hello for her. 她让我顺便拜访你,并带她向你问好。

Could you stop by the store on the way home for some bread? 回家时你能不能顺路进那家店里买点面包?


2、come on in: come in;enter

① Come on in, the door's open! 请进,门是开着的。

②If nobody answers the door when you ring tonight, just come on in. 如果你今晚来按门铃没有人来开门,直接进就是了。


3、hold a grudge against (sb.):stay angry with sb. about a past offense 怀恨在心

① Nicole holds a grudge against Jenny for voting for Andrea instead of her. 妮可对杰妮怀恨在心,因为她把票投给了安德鲁。

Never hold a grudge against your family; try to forgive and forget. 不可怨恨家人;要设法宽恕,不再放在心上。


4、at first:in the beginning 一开始,最初   这个表达在第16章出现过。

5、burn sb. up:make sb. angry;irritate sb.  惹怒/激怒某人

eg. The way he treats me really burns me up. 他这样对待我真使我生气/恼火。

6、no hard feelings:no anger;no bittemess 别见怪;别往心里去

① He held out his large hand. 'No hard feelings, right?' 他伸出大手:“不生气,对吧?”

② We had a heated argument, but no hard feelings. Let's move on. 我们进行了激烈的争论,但别往心里去。让我们继续前进吧。


7、three sheets to the wind:drunk;wasted;lquored up;dead drunk 形容喝得非常醉,行为举止不稳定,就像帆船上所有的帆都松开了,随风飘动,不受控制。这个表达起源于航海术语,"sheet" 是指控制帆的绳索,"three sheets" 意味着所有的帆都松了,因此船会随风乱转。

① After drinking four beers, Bob was three sheets to the wind. 喝了4瓶啤酒后,鲍勃是彻底醉了。

② By the end of the night he was three sheets to the wind and we had to take him home in a cab. 那晚最后他喝得酩酊大醉,我们只好用出租车把他送回家。


8、get rid of:free oneself of;throw out 处理;解决;解雇;摆脱

9、get (sth.) straight: clarify;understand 如它字面意思一样,把某物捋直,如果某件事情一团乱麻、某件事情讲得糊里糊涂,那get it straight就是把这一团乱麻捋直、捋清楚。

① So let me get this straight. You didn't know I love you? 换句话说,你不知道我爱你?

② Just to get things straight, the meeting has been rescheduled to 3 PM, correct?我想确认清楚,会议已经重新安排到下午3点,对吗?


10、get plastered:get drunk;get loaded;get sloshed 醉薰薰的;喝个大醉;喝醉酒 

eg. We used to get plastered before every game. 我们以前每场比赛前都要大醉一场。


11、on the job:at work 在工作;在工作岗位上;在干活儿

① Real learning, however, takes place on the job. 但真正的学习是在工作中发生的。

② There was no formal training; they learned on the job. 并没有正式的培训;他们是边干边学的。


12、lose one's head:lose control of one's behavior;not know what one is doing 惊慌失措;不知所措;失去理智

① It is important not to lose your head. 重要的是不要失去理智

② Don't lose your head over it! 别因此而昏头了!


13、level with (sb.): speak openly and honestly with sb. 与…持平;和…一样高;向(某人)说实话

① I'll level with you. I've no training or anything. 实话告诉你吧,我没有受过任何训练。

② He leaned over the counter so his face was almost level with the boy's. 他倾身伏在柜台上,一张脸几乎凑到小男孩的面前。


14、let (sb.)go:  fire;dismiss employees 解雇;开除

① The investment bank let Chris go after they discovering he was stealing erasers,paper clips,and other office supplies. 克里斯因为偷拿办公用品而被解雇了。

② They held him for three hours and they let him go. 他们扣留了他3个小时后放走了他。


15、no use crying over spilt milk:there's no point in regretting sth. that's too late to change 覆水难收 

“别为打翻的牛奶哭泣”是英国一句古代的谚语,意即中文的覆水难收。

① As the saying goes ─ it's no use crying over spilt milk. 常言道:覆水难收,后悔也于事无补。

② What happened had happened already and there's no use crying over spilt milk. 发生的事情,已经都发生了,不能悔改。


16、Not on your life!:definitely not!这辈子都别想!


17、well off:wealthy;financially secure 富裕的,富有的;繁荣昌盛的,阔绰的;境况良好的

① Some people don't know when they're well off. 有些人身在福中不知福。

② I've got my own room so I'm well off. 我有自己的房间,所以还不错。


18、small fortune:a good amount of money 一大笔钱

① A car like that costs a small fortune. 那样的车价格不菲。

② We've forked out a small fortune on their education. 我们在他们的教育上可花了不少钱。
