Lesson 20 Bob Gets an Angry Call from Carol

第20章 卡罗尔生气了

1、rant and rave:talk loudly, often in anger 咆哮;大声叫嚷

I don't rant and rave or throw tea cups. 我不会大喊大叫或摔茶杯。

You can rant and rave at the fine, but you'll still have to pay it. 你闹也好,骂也好,罚金还是得交。


2、be taken aback:be surprised (almost always in a negative sense) 吃惊;大吃一惊;吓了一跳

①Nicole was taken aback when her friend Rosa told her she no longer wanted to hang out with her.

② I was taken aback when my friend asked me if she could borrow my toothbrush because she forgot hers at home.


3、as a imatter of fact:in fact; actually 事实上;确切地说

It'll serve him right if they throw the book at him. 要是他们对他严惩重罚,那是他罪有应得。


6、find out: learn; discover 搞清楚;找出;查明;揭发

I need to find out who tried to frame me. 我得找出是谁企图诬陷我。

You'll soon find out who's who in the office. 你很快就会了解办公室里每个人的情况。


7、sweep (sth.) under the rug: hide sth., often a scandal 避免讨论或处理(一些消极的或令人不安的事情) 

最初最常见的是"sweep dirt/dust under the rug",表示将灰尘扫到地毯下面(盖起来,以至于看上去干干净净的)。rug 也可以换成carpet, 但是前者更常用更常见。

    sweep v. 扫去,清除   rug n. 小地毯;垫子;(盖腿的)厚毯子

The senator has been accused of trying to sweep his former drug use under the rug. 这位参议员被指控试图掩盖他以前吸过毒。

You need to stop sweeping your problems under the rug. 你不要再逃避你的问题了。

11、get one's act together:get organized;start operating more effectively 齐心协力

②We'd better get our act together. Otherwise, we're going to miss our fight. 我们最好齐心协力,不然这次会输。


12、knock oneself out:work very hard at something(sometimes too hard) 辛苦地工作;工作努力;精疲力尽;使自己精疲力尽

①Can I have one more beer? Sure, knock yourself. out 我可以再喝点啤酒吗?随你,请自便。在这里,knock yourself out的意思是 go ahead.和 feel free。

Don't knock yourself out. 悠着点,别把自己累坏了。那件事不值得你这么费劲。
