Several KFC restaurants in Tianjin have been found using genetically modified (GM) soybean oil without notifying customers, according to a report by Tianjin Daily on Tuesday.
Local market regulation authorities discovered the use of GM soybean oil during inspections, prompting an official investigation. Under China’s Food Safety Law, businesses are required to clearly label genetically modified food. If companies fail to do so, authorities have the right to confiscate the GM food, along with any related equipment and materials.
During a recent inspection at a KFC outlet, reporters observed that market regulators found GM soybean oil being used without proper disclosure to customers. When questioned, store employees denied knowledge of the issue and declined to comment further, according to the report.
Employees informed the authorities that the oil was primarily used for grilled products. The oil has since been confiscated, and further investigations into the restaurant’s practices are underway.
Additional KFC outlets in Tianjin were also found to be using GM soybean oil without informing customers, as revealed by the ongoing investigations. These cases have been officially recorded for further examination.
