Recently, the Criminal Division of the Wuxue Court held a fair and public trial in accordance with the law for a case involving a Vietnamese defendant accused of kidnapping. The presiding judge, in line with relevant criminal procedure laws, arranged for a professional interpreter and legal aid for the foreign defendant, ensuring the fairness and proper conduct of the trial.
According to the prosecution, in 2023, defendants He and Nguyen (a Vietnamese national handled in a separate case) worked through intermediaries to introduce Vietnamese women as wives to single men in exchange for broker fees. By the latter half of 2023, the Vietnamese wives introduced by He had repeatedly fled. He then paid the men's families hundreds of thousands of yuan in compensation.
From March to April 2024, in order to earn broker fees and seek compensation from the intermediary, He arranged for three Vietnamese women to come to Huanggang City, where he used violent means to restrict their personal freedom and extorted money from their families. Defendants Cheng and Shi (also a Vietnamese national) knowingly assisted in controlling the hostages' freedom despite knowing about He’s intent to hold people as hostages.
The actions of the three defendants constitute violations of Article 239, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law of the People’s Republic of China, and they should be held criminally responsible for kidnapping.
