Shanghai has raised the alert level for typhoon Kong-rey to yellow, the third highest in a four-colored warning system, for some regions on Friday morning, as the city is expected to experience accumulated rainfall reaching torrential levels.
From 4 am to 10:30 am on Friday, 18.6 percent of towns in Shanghai reported rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters. Among them, one town in Chongming district of Shanghai saw the highest rainfall, reaching 86.1 millimeters, according to Shanghai meteorological authorities.
According to the information released by National Meteorological Center around 11 am on Friday, the typhoon is located around 115 kilometers southwest of Wenling in East China’s Zhejiang Province. It is moving northeast at approximately 40 kilometers per hour, and its intensity is gradually weakening, said the center.
The typhoon is expected to make landfall or closely skirt the coastal regions around noon. Zhejiang Province has already relocated 282,000 people in preparation for the storm, according to The Paper on Friday.
In Shanghai, some attractions have been suspended, and severely effected regions have relocated residents, with temporary shelters provided, according to media reports.
The Shanghai Metro network is operating normally, but a notice has been issued reminding passengers to be cautious due to the heavy rainfall.
The railway authorities have implemented temporary suspension measures for some passenger trains from Thursday to Friday due to the impact of the typhoon.
