作为本届艺术节的指导原则,露丝国际艺术节的大部分规划围绕着艺术实践中的在地性、实验性、媒介多元、社群共生、生态融合和持续生长等核心理念展开。以“城市剧场”、“社群共生”、“开放剧场”为核心的叙事结构,搭建起允许艺术家自由创作的现场,策展团队放弃了代表性展示策略,转而将视线焦点集中在艺术家与公众的积极参与上。
As the guiding principle for this year, much of the Ruthin International Arts Festival planning revolves around the core concepts of site-specificity, experimentation, medium diversity, community symbiosis, ecology integration, and sustainable growth in contemporary art practice. Taking "Site-responsive", "Community", and "Openness" as the core narrative structure, the curatorial team builds up a site where artists have the freedom to create their works, abandoning the representative display strategy and focusing on the interactive participation of artists and the public instead.

本届露丝国际艺术节将以整个露丝小镇作为艺术事件发生的现场,根据露丝小镇的历史、文化、习俗、气候、建筑、社群等特质,通过社区参与的形式让艺术实践有机地介入到小镇的公共空间、公共事件和社区生活之中,为露丝镇创造一个新的聚集空间,作为社区建设的一部分。
By taking the roots of specific sites and by creating with the history, culture, customs, climate, architecture, community and other characteristics of Ruthin, curators and artists will take the town of Ruthin as the scene where the art event happens and make a connection with the host community by means of art, so that art can organically intervene in the public space, public events, and community life of the town, generating a new collective living space for the town of Ruthin and serving as a part of the community construction.

本届露丝国际艺术节以“城市剧场”的介入方式展开,通过具体的嵌入式艺术实践,将露丝小镇变成一个鲜活的 “城市剧场”,促进社区之间建立更深层的联系,实现与地方建立长期相遇的承诺。本次艺术节,策展人重点关注独立于机构之外的艺术现场,注重当代艺术创作的现场感、身体性、及时性和有机的空间参与,强调对当代艺术创作媒介和内涵表达上的新思维、新观念、新形式的深入探索。
Ruthin International Arts Festival 2024 will be carried out in an intervention mode of "Site-Responsive" urban theatre", transforming the town of Ruthin into a living urban theatre through specific practices embedded in everyday material life, fostering further connections between communities and fulfilling the promise of long-term encounters with the local. For this year, the curators highlight the art scene, which is independent of art institutions, focusing on the site, body, moment and organic spatial engagement and emphasising the in-depth exploration of advanced concepts, innovative forms, and updated thinking of contemporary artistic mediums and ideology.

We hope to retrace the experimental and avant-garde spirit that characterised the birth of contemporary art in the last century and bring art back to touching the real world again. Within the framework of the academic research for RIAF, curators are dedicated to combining multi-disciplinary research methods to explore the perceptual overlap and close connection between contemporary art theories and sociology, politics, and relational aesthetics, encouraging artists to further explore the relationship between theoretical research and expended practice based on existing academic research.

The conceptual dimension of site-specificity maps the growing rhizome of multiple life experiences in the local context. The starting point for us to answer the question of building a new art ecosystem is how to bring together expressions of life from "elsewhere" to generate new collaborations and transformations. In an experiential world formed by the artists' collaborative recreations, the encounter with the locals will bring a collective discussion about the external and internal aspects of the living environment.

Ruthin International Arts Festival will actively establish relationships with different orientated communities through artistic interventions, mediation and dialogue and encourage field research projects to be open to the local community on a long-term basis. We aim to draw a new research path in this place. We strive to combine the artists' personal life experiences, focus on the creative vigour of the tiny living organisms themselves, and finally return the right of artistic creation to the community, enabling all new ideas to grow together with the community. The sustainable art commons created in this process will offer a new proposal for constructing an organic art ecosystem that is continuously questioned, repeatedly pursued and constantly explored.
为了扎根社区与当地社群产生互动,露丝艺术节特别设置了 “家庭策展” 、“威尔士语写作”、“社区艺术工坊”、“露丝平行展”、“生态研究”、“公共教育”等参与式艺术项目作为此次艺术节的平行展览项目。通过邀请当地居民参与艺术家的创作过程和现场实施,提供给公众一个在交流、互动、对话的开放空间中偶遇“此处”的机会,以促进艺术融入生活,加强“此处”与“别处”的深入链接,让艺术与社区微更新紧密相联。
To create interaction with the local community, this year's Ruthin International Arts Festival has specially set up "Home Curator", "Welsh Language Writing" and "Community Art Workshop", "Ruthin Parallel Exhibitions", "Ecological Research" and "Public Education" as sub-units of the festival. At the same time, local residents will be invited to participate in the work-in-progress art programme and on-site execution, providing the audience with the opportunity to meet "here" in an open space of communication, interaction and dialogue to promote the integration of art into the daily life, strengthening the profound link between "here" and "elsewhere", and closely linking the art with the community micro-renewal.

Moreover, this year's festival will adopt an interdisciplinary and cross-domain approach, opening up as many possibilities as possible in the public space. We aim to promote artworks originally inhabiting the static exhibition space that can interact dynamically with the surrounding environment and ultimately make the art become a channel for interaction with the history, humanities, and natural environment of the town of Ruthin, maintaining a continuous dialogue between the art and its ecological environment, and creating an organic art ecosystem and a rich artistic narration at Ruthin.

This independent and open-ended section stimulates public participation under the set rules of how to engage in live performances with artists. We expect to complete the transformation and handover of discourse in the public space with a spatial intervention of artistic improvisation and organic production, thereby creating a growing live art festival like a plant.
通过诗歌,声音,身体表演将观众从单独的观看场域中引入到一个共同参与的协作中,激活观众的情景体验,本届露丝国际艺术节在参与形式和媒介的艺术表达上追求多元贯通。参与此次艺术节的所有艺术家作品和实践包括但不限于实验表演、电影、诗歌、装置、声音、剧场、写作、社会参与式艺术等。相对于前两个板块,这个板块更强调开放性和参与性。在露丝艺术节的特定情境中,策展人希望打造一个兼具创造性与可持续发展的知识生产与展示模式,重新批判思考那些抽离出原生环境的个体或群体的处境与遭遇,旨在为艺术家创造出无限生长的自由场域,鼓励其突破媒介局限,延展当代艺术的媒介边界,重新检视当前多元的艺术生态系统。
Through poetry, sound, and physical performance, we pursue diversity and coherence in integrating art forms and mediums by bringing viewers from a solitary viewing space into a collaborative, participatory process that activates the audience's sense experience. All the works and practices of the artists participating in the festival include but are not limited to, experimental performances, film screenings, poems, installations, sound, theatre, writing, social-engaged art, and so on. Compared to the previous two sections, this section emphasises openness and engagement. In the context of RIAF, the curators hope to create a creative and sustainable mode of knowledge production and display model and to construct a critical field to rethink the situation and encounters of individuals or communities removed from their original environments. Throughout this boundless free field, artists will break through the limitations of the medium, extend the boundaries of the contemporary art medium, and re-examine the current diversified art ecosystem.

We will open the exhibition to the public for improvisation and interaction and organise artist residency and workshops during the exhibition period. We plan to record and summarise these practices selectively as part of the archival exhibition and consolidate them as archival documentation alongside the works in the main exhibition space next year. Each following edition of the festival will be organised as a double programme of 'A - Site + B - Documenta'.
