Jack Catling

About the Artist and Work

Jack Catling is a UK-based artist working in performance, installation, sculpture, and film. Since 2002, his work has explored the intersections of reality, theatrical illusion, and suspension of disbelief. Inspired by Walter Benjamin's notion of the "blue distance," Catling examines how these elements reveal the magical backstage layers of the world, questioning our acceptance of reality.

Living and working in London for over 20 years, Catling uses the city's fabric and its relationships with other spaces to drive his artistic practice. He is the founding member of Parlour Collective, a performance group exploring space and memory in unique locations worldwide, and co-director of Cabaret Melancholique, a 20-year experiment in warped music hall.

As a filmmaker, Catling has produced several films, including the multi-award-winning 'Scenes, Overheard' and 'Shifting Landscapes,' showcased in prestigious international film festivals. His fictional writing has been published in various journals and publications.

A solitary window looks out onto changing scenes, landscapes and moments. A film inspired by moments of childhood wonder and narrative, half remembered and half invented when daydreaming by the window.

Zhang Zaozao & You Liang

About the Artist and Work

A woman gazes at her flaming body upon the ruins.

Her story starts in a locked room. bewitched by an evil deity, the mad woman embarks on a journey to immolate herself by leaping into a volcano. The river of time flows backward, carrying her body upstream as she undergoes countless fantastical adventures, death, eternity, and the cosmic explosion. She finally arrives in the face of a goddess and ultimately jumps into the volcano…

ZAOZAO ZHANG (b.1998)

Interdisciplinary sculpture artist, Zaozao Zhang's works have strong feminist overtones. Through sculpture, printmaking, performance, and videos, she examines the human body as a symbol of power within the patriarchal framework. Her art resists the colonization of the female body, referencing witchcraft and idolizing the female, infusing it into objects, architecture, and mythology. Fire and poetry offer solace amidst her sorrow of family separation and the struggles faced by the queer community in East Asia. Emerging from frailty and strength, her works give shape to her emotions, transforming them into poignant and ephemeral moments, inviting viewers to pause and reflect.

You Liang

You Liang is a Mongolian Chinese artist based in London, working with photography, film, and publications. She is a member of Pearl Slug Studio and the founder of Raging magazine. Liang's art explores migration and diaspora, influenced by her mother’s migration from northern Asia and her father’s work as a migrant worker in Southeast Asia during her childhood. Her current practice investigates female identity as a lesbian growing up in Asia under the One Child Policy, and the impact of her queer identity on the women in her family. Liang’s works respond to subconscious and collective memory, creating a space for unspoken emotions and reflections.
