Global HIV Epidemic Overview: As of 2023, there were approximately 39.9 million people living with HIV globally. Nearly a quarter of them, that is, 9.3 million people, did not have access to life-saving treatment, resulting in one death due to AIDS-related causes every minute. In 2023, 630,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses globally, and there were approximately 1.3 million new HIV infections.
HIV Epidemic Overview in China: As of June 30, 2024, a total of 1,329,127 people living with HIV/AIDS have been reported in 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government) (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan), and 474,006 deaths have been reported. Currently, 740,787 people are living with HIV, and 588,340 are AIDS patients.
The Current Situation of AIDS among Young Students: The "Blue Book on Reproductive Health of Chinese Youth" jointly released by the Health Development Research Center of the National Health Commission and other units shows that in 2023, a total of 3,010 cases of young students aged 15 - 24 were reported. A report released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention disclosed that from 2010 to 2019, a total of 141,557 HIV-infected cases were reported among people aged 15 - 24, including young students. The male-female ratio was 33.9 to 1, and the average age was 19.9 years old.
From the perspective of transmission routes, sexual transmission is the main route of AIDS transmission. In China, the proportion of this transmission route is as high as over 97% (among which heterosexual transmission accounts for about 73% or more than 70%). In addition, there are also obvious differences in regional distribution. Sichuan, Guangxi, Chongqing, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places are high-incidence areas of AIDS infection with a relatively large number of infected people. Only Shandong and Tibet have a relatively small infection proportion.
Take Beijing as an example. From January to October 2024, there were 1,105 newly added HIV-infected individuals and AIDS patients living in Beijing, a 21% decrease compared with the same period last year. Currently, there are a total of 28,000 HIV-infected individuals and AIDS patients living in the city, approaching 30,000. This data indicates that although Beijing has achieved certain results in AIDS prevention and control, there is still a long way to go in this regard.
